Freddie Freeman didn’t just start the Tuesday evening right for his milestone—he finished it that way, too.

At PNC Park, the Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman reached 2,500 career hits, becoming the only active player to do so. The math going into the week’s series against the Pirates was simple: the 17-year veteran needed just two hits to reach the mark.

He got them in the most Freeman fashion—an RBI single in a 10-run seventh inning that carried the moment home. For a player in his age-36 season, it’s the kind of night that makes the broader picture hard to ignore. Freeman is still producing in a way that feels built to last.

His milestone-clinching hit was his 69th of the season. putting him on pace for just over 160 on the year if he stays healthy and productive. Those numbers matter for more than one reason. Freeman’s on track to crack the hallowed 3. 000-hit mark. and he’s already positioned for Cooperstown-level language that follows you around when you keep stacking contact and counting stats.

Freeman is a nine-time All-Star and the 2020 NL MVP. Becoming the 34th player to reach 3,000 hits would only further solidify his already decorated case. He’s also closing in on another number that carries Hall of Fame gravity—400 career home runs. Freeman has 377 homers. and the estimate in his current trajectory is that he should land within range in the next two seasons.

There are also signs in the underlying numbers that suggest this isn’t a fading act. In 2026, Freeman’s 46.4% hard-hit rate—batted balls at 95 mph or higher—is in the 75th percentile. His xwOBA sits in the 83rd percentile.

Across the diamond of the active-hit leaderboard, Freeman’s in a special class all his own right now. Astros star Jose Altuve could join him by season’s end. Altuve, also age 36, is in his 16th season and currently has 2,430 hits.

And even as the 2,500 milestone landed, Freeman’s attention appears to be forward-looking. Recently, he told The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal that he intends to play three more seasons after this one, though the birth of his first daughter in April could alter those plans.

“What I can reach a couple of ‘em, that would be pretty cool,” Freeman told Rosenthal of personal accolades. “I just always viewed myself as trying to be the best hitter I can possibly be. I’ve never changed. There is so much about launch angles, trajectories, hitting home runs. I knew who I was. Being stubborn and knowing who I was, I didn’t want to change.”.

In a season where Freeman is already collecting rare landmarks—2,500 hits, 69 RBI hits of the current year, and a runway toward 3,000—it’s not just a celebration. It’s another reminder that the game’s elite still find ways to keep moving the goalposts, one swing at a time.

  1. I feel like they said he needed two hits and then the game got like 10 runs in one inning?? So basically the Pirates just handed it to him. Either way congrats I guess.

  2. Wait so is he the only ACTIVE player with 2,500 hits or is he the only one on the Dodgers roster? Cause it says only active player but then talks about 17-year vet like everybody else is retired or something. Also “hard to ignore” like that’s supposed to mean he’s gonna break records next too lol.

  3. I don’t get how they’re already talking about 3,000 hits and Cooperstown and he’s only at 2,500. That part about being on pace for 160 hits just sounds made up to me, like they’re projecting based on one good week. But yeah 400 HR in the next two seasons?? seems fast. Also 69th of the season?? I’m confused on the numbers but happy for him.
