Clive Davis is no longer here.

The legendary music mogul died at 94, with his passing confirmed on Monday, June 22. Davis died in his home in New York City, according to confirmation shared by TMZ.

On Monday morning, a post was shared through Davis’ official Instagram. We will miss him greatly, cherish him always, and carry his love with us for the rest of our lives.”.

At this time, Davis’ cause of death reportedly remains unclear. The reporting notes that he had been hospitalized “with an upper respiratory infection” before being discharged on June 4.

Davis’ legacy isn’t something people are treating like history—it’s living material. Social media users filled comment sections with memories and reactions tied to his work, including the fact that he discovered Whitney Houston and founded Bad Boy Records with Diddy.

People also pointed to the artists Davis signed and developed, including Alicia Keys, Carrie Underwood, and Kelly Clarkson, along with others.

In the comment section, Instagram user @coopdajuice wrote, “Documentary gone be longer than a CVS receipt.” Instagram user @reallifechina.doll added, “Okay brandy now what did the letter say?!!!”

Others leaned into Whitney Houston nostalgia. Instagram user @_ms_sojourner posted, “AND IIIIIIII E IIIIIII… don’t care. Long Live Whitney!” while @iamkhyd94 wrote, “LONG LIVE WHITNEY!!!!”

Some comments pulled in pop culture references, like @domdukess: “‘Hey Siri’ play Whitney Houston‼️ just feels like one of those days 😎🙂‍↕️🤷🏾‍♂️.” Instagram user @shani_monroe33 wrote, “I love how collectively side eyed this😂.”

A few reactions went broader, connecting Davis’ death to a wider, heavier news cycle. @keepitcute_____ said. “Nicki was right omg. when Jay z in the news somebody dies omg yall don’t think that’s scary that it happens EVERY TIME. no like fr !. I didn’t wanna say nothing but this really like the 6th time this year lol.” Instagram user @carmensandiego_85 wrote. “The way I zoom zoomed to these comments!!. 🏃🏾‍♀️😂” while @truly.rare posted, “& All the souls have been released 🙏🏽.”.

The death of Clive Davis was preceded by another loss in music: producer Tay Keith. As The Shade Room previously reported. on June 18. it was reported that Tay Keith was found deceased inside his apartment in Nashville. Tennessee. At the time. it was reported that no foul play was suspected. and officers had arrived at his home for a welfare check.

For the people who lived inside Davis’ sound—whether as artists he championed or fans who grew up on the music he shaped—this news lands as more than a headline. It arrives with names, years, and voices that still feel present.

  1. So he died in NYC after that upper respiratory infection thing, right? Like that’s wild, I feel like those can turn into something fast. Also he totally helped shape all the pop stuff I listened to so yeah… sad.

  2. I’m confused though—TMZ says cause unclear but then people acting like they know everything. Upper respiratory infection… discharged June 4… so did he die from COVID or something? Everybody says different things. Kinda messed up how rumors fly.

  3. Clive Davis was the reason I even knew Whitney Houston existed, so I’m not trying to hear anybody say “music industry is dead” like nah, dude built careers. I saw that Instagram line about him being the soundtrack of our lives and got emotional, not gonna lie. The Diddy and Bad Boy Records part too—people forget he was behind a lot of that whole era. R.I.P.
