MorningStar Farms recalls nuggets and sausage patties

MorningStar Farms is recalling specific batches of vegetarian Buffalo Chik’n Nuggets and Hot & Spicy Sausage Patties sold in the U.S., Puerto Rico, and Costa Rica after regulators flagged a possible presence of plastic. Customers are told to discard the produc

A bag of plant-based food can look like a simple dinner choice. But for people who bought MorningStar Farms vegetarian nuggets and sausage patties, the message now is blunt: don’t eat them.

The Food and Drug Administration announced a recall on Monday, June 22, warning that two MorningStar Farms products may contain pieces of plastic. The brand is recalling vegetarian chicken nuggets and sausage patties due to the possible presence of plastic, according to that FDA announcement.

The recalled items were distributed in the U.S., Puerto Rico, and Costa Rica.

Two specific products are affected. In the United States, MorningStar Farms says these batches are included:

10.5 oz bags of “MorningStar Farms Buffalo Chik’n Nuggets,” UPC code 000 28989 10110 5. The affected “best by” date ranges are July 7 and 8, 2027.

8 oz bags of “MorningStar Farms Hot & Spicy Sausage Patties,” UPC code 000 28989 10094 8. The affected “best by” date ranges are July 5, 6, and 7, 2027.

At this point, the recall notice does not name specific retailers. MorningStar Farms’ parent company, Kellanova (owned by Mars Inc.), also posted the recall notice on its website.

A Kellanova spokesperson said the recall was initiated after “customer complaints,” adding that no injuries were reported. The company also said: “As soon as we learned of a potential issue. we moved quickly to investigate and identify any foods produced that might be impacted. We have addressed the issue and enhanced our quality control procedures to prevent a similar situation occurring in the future.”.

If you have any of the impacted products, the instructions are clear. MorningStar Farms says customers should not eat any Buffalo Chik’n Nuggets or Hot & Spicy Sausage Patties affected by the recall. The company directs consumers to discard the items and contact the brand for a full refund.

Customers can reach MorningStar Farms from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET, Monday to Friday, by phone at 800-962-0120 or through text at 877-453-5837.

This story was updated to include Kellanova’s response to the inquiry.

  1. I mean if it has plastic you just throw it out right? But why did they wait so long, customer complaints or what? I don’t even buy those so whatever.

  2. So is this like… the bag itself has plastic bits? Or they mean inside the food the nuggets are basically cursed now. Also “best by” dates 2027 is wild, that means it could’ve been sitting around forever.

  3. My cousin said Mars owns everything so I’m like why is Kellanova/Mars always in the middle of recalls lol. The article says no injuries but plastic is still plastic, people are gonna be eating it before they even check the UPC. If they “enhanced quality control” then why are we here again? Also Puerto Rico too, that’s not close to me but still gross.
