For the Philadelphia Phillies, the day had barely started when the lineup card changed. Tuesday’s game against the Washington Nationals began with one major absence: Kyle Schwarber.

Philadelphia suffered a 1-0 loss to Washington on Monday, and the club was hoping to rebound. But just minutes before first pitch, Schwarber was scratched from the contest due to lower back tightness, leaving the Phillies to adjust on the fly.

The decision came right before the game, and at the time it wasn’t clear who would sub in for Schwarber. Kyle Schwarber was ruled out after being scratched minutes before first pitch with lower back tightness. The severity of his back injury was also unknown.

Brandon Marsh was already in the plan to cover the spot, with Marsh batting second and playing left field for the Phillies on Tuesday. Even as the substitution was set for the outfield, the rest of the lineup still wasn’t fully in place right after the scratch.

The situation is still developing, and additional information about Schwarber’s condition and what comes next for Philadelphia is expected soon.

  1. I didn’t even realize he was hurt until right before the game. Lower back tightness sounds minor but then they scratched him… makes me nervous.

  2. They said Marsh was already planned, but it also says the rest of the lineup wasn’t in place yet? So like who was actually batting? This is why I hate baseball lineups, it’s always changing last second. Also maybe Washington had something to do with it?? not sure.

  3. Back tightness minutes before first pitch feels like one of those injuries that turns into a whole thing. Phillies better not rush him back, because last game was 1-0 anyway and now this. I’m just gonna say it: if he can’t play, they should’ve had a better backup than making adjustments on the fly.
