Clark enters U.S. Open final with $22.5 million purse

With Wyndham Clark holding a six-shot lead at 7-under as the 126th U.S. Open turns to Sunday’s final round at Shinnecock Hills, the tournament’s $22.5 million purse and $4.5 million top prize are within reach—alongside a full payout structure down to 67th plac

Wind and pace have already tested the field at Shinnecock Hills in Southampton, New York—and now the U.S. Open is just 18 holes away from crowning a new champion.

Wyndham Clark arrived at Sunday’s final round with a six-shot cushion at 7-under par. In the final group, Scottie Scheffler started the day at 1-under, sitting among four golfers on that score along with Tom Kim, Sahith Theegala and Sam Stevens—each six shots back from Clark.

The day also carried the sharp reminder that the U.S. Open can end just as quickly as it begins. J.J. Spaun, the 2025 champion, did not make the cut. Rory McIlroy, meanwhile, was on the course Thursday talking about the setup, saying, “The greens are pretty slow and quite receptive.”

As the leaders chase the top trophy, the economics of this week’s golf—spread across a $22.5 million total purse—are now moving in lockstep with every swing.

  1. I keep seeing $22.5 million like it’s nothing lol. Don’t these guys ever feel pressure when the top prize is $4.5 million? Also Shinnecock Hills sounds fake.

  2. Spaun didn’t make the cut, so clearly Rory must’ve jinxed it when he said the greens were slow? Like if the greens are receptive that means they’re giving free shots right? /s

  3. Four guys at -1 and still 6 shots back?? That seems like the scoring is messed up or they’re playing different holes or something. Also I’m surprised Scheffler is only -1, feels like he always wins these tournaments.
