Christopher Meloni backs Jalen Brunson for SVU

Christopher Meloni says Jalen Brunson “absolutely” has what it takes to be cast on “Law & Order: SVU,” echoing Brunson’s own desire to appear after his 2026 NBA title push. The Knicks star has already drawn attention from the show’s lead actress Mariska Hargit

For Jalen Brunson, the next checkpoint might not be on a basketball court at all.

Christopher Meloni. who plays Elliot Stabler on “Law & Order: SVU. ” confirmed to TMZ Sports that Brunson has a real shot at joining the series. When asked about Brunson’s interest, Meloni didn’t hedge. “I don’t know if you’ve heard, but he’s the world champion,” Meloni said. “He can do whatever the hell he wants.” He added, “He’s got the force of will.”.

The Knicks point guard’s “SVU” ambition is already out in the open. Days after Brunson. at 29 years old. said he wants “to try to get on SVU” after securing the 2026 NBA title. the show’s stars have matched that momentum with their own enthusiasm. Meloni’s endorsement came on top of that earlier push—and it lands with extra weight because it’s the franchise itself. not just a celebrity nod.

Mariska Hargitay, a longtime “SVU” lead, is fully on board. She has not just expressed support in words; she’s shown up in person. She has been spotted cheering for the Knicks throughout the playoffs. attended multiple games at Madison Square Garden. and even sent Brunson a congratulatory text after the team’s 105-95 win over the San Antonio Spurs.

Brunson’s path to Hargitay’s attention runs through a show that has been part of his routine long before any casting talk. In a May 2025 episode of the “Roommates Show” podcast. Brunson said his dad—former Knicks player and coach Rick Brunson—introduced him to “SVU.” “I just remember my dad always watching the show. You just hear the iconic ‘dun dun’ all the time, like in the house. My dad also watches the TV incredibly loud, so like you hear it throughout… the echo,” Brunson said.

He also described the way the series fits into his own life as something more than background entertainment. Brunson called “SVU” a pregame show, something he watched before getting a nap in. “I’ve always loved that show,” he said. “And then the first time… I’ve never been like super super starstruck, super starstruck. I saw her [Mariska Hargitay] I was like ‘Oh [expletive].’ And then the first time we met. it was awesome. We talked and everything.”.

That personal thread—hard work, nerves, and belief—was echoed by Hargitay in another public appearance. On June 8. in an appearance pegged to her Broadway debut in “Every Brilliant Thing. ” she told “Today” that Brunson was her friend and her inspiration. “I love him,” Hargitay said. “I can’t believe. I was so terrified to do my show that I actually like tried to and just thought about him and his inspiration and his humility and his work ethic to say ‘You can do hard things. No matter what you can do hard things’ because this was all new to me.”.

She followed that with a clear compliment for who he is to her: “But he is so singular and magnificent. He is a magnificent human,” she added.

Put together. the facts land in a rare place where sports and television momentum reinforce each other: Brunson’s desire to “try to get on SVU. ” Hargitay’s public support that stretches from texts to Madison Square Garden seats. and Meloni’s direct confidence that Brunson “absolutely” has what it takes. The real tension now isn’t whether he has interest—it’s whether that 2026 title goal becomes the kind of moment that also opens the door on a different stage.

  1. Meloni is hyping him up like he’s already cast, but does Jalen even act? NBA players always say they want to do everything after one ring and then it’s crickets.

  2. I saw Mariska was at Knicks games and thought that was random, but now it makes sense. Except TMZ wording is weird like “next checkpoint might not be on a basketball court” like SVU is a video game checkpoint?? idk. Also I’m pretty sure the show would not let an athlete just walk in and do whatever the hell he wants.

  3. This whole thing sounds like marketing. Like Mariska texts him after a win and now he’s magically on SVU? It’s probably just a cameo, but Meloni saying “world champion” like that means acting credits?? Still, I’d watch just to see Brunson try to hit those dramatic monologue faces.
