Chappell Roan deletes social apps to stay sane

Chappell Roan says she doesn’t keep social media apps on her phone, deleting them when they get “too much.” She credits her “very privileged position” for being able to step away without derailing her career—though she admits the negativity can be “dishearteni
Chappell Roan doesn’t just take breaks from social media—she keeps herself from it.
During the June 1 episode of the P&G and iHeartRadio “Elton John Impact Awards” podcast. the “Pink Pony Club” singer revealed she doesn’t have social media apps on her phone. She described the negativity she encounters online—through comments and posts—as “disheartening. ” and said she avoids logging on when it starts to pile up.
“When it becomes too much and keep it moving,” Roan said. “Because at the end of the day, no matter what anyone says about me online or in person, it’s not gonna stop people like Elton [John] and I [from] donating money, donating time, writing about things that matter to us.”
She added that deleting social media helps her “make it out of that hurricane” of negativity, while emphasizing that the choice isn’t the same for every artist.
“That’s hard for a lot of artists because, if you really rely on social media to fuel your momentum, that can be really disheartening… So I’m in a very privileged position where I can be like, ‘I’m not gonna be on this and I’ll be fine,’” Roan said.
Her stance goes back further. On her April 2025 appearance on the “Las Culturistas” podcast. she told hosts Matt Rogers and Bowen Yang that she deleted Instagram and TikTok to “protect [her] creative psyche.” She explained that since she’s writing. she tries to build boundaries around what she reads.
“Because I’m writing right now, I have to build a force field around it. If I want to for sure have a bad day… I read the comments, and I just have to remind myself, ‘If you open these, you’re not going to feel good.’ It’s never worth it. It just hurts my feelings,” she said.
Roan’s latest work also reflects the patience she’s carving out for herself. Her last project was 2025’s “The Subway.” And in an August 2025 interview with Vogue, she said there’s still no second album in sight since her 2023 debut, “The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess.”
“It took me five years to write the first [album], and it’s probably going to take at least five to write the next. I’m not that type of writer that can pump it out. I don’t think I make good music whenever I force myself to do anything,” she said.
The through-line in Roan’s story is simple: when the online noise threatens her mood and focus, she chooses distance—deleting apps, stepping away, and refusing to treat attention like a requirement.

Good for her, social media is poison anyway.
Wait so she deleted apps bc comments are mean? honestly that’s everyone. But I feel like people just make it worse by looking for drama then acting surprised.
Not gonna lie I don’t get it. If she’s famous you can’t really “not see” stuff. People will post screenshots for you. Also “privileged position” like okay sure but I’m sure fans would still support even if she stayed on IG?
I saw this on TikTok too, and I think she said something about a “hurricane” of negativity? Like girl just block the accounts, it’s not that deep. But I guess if she’s writing she wants peace. Idk though, deleting everything isn’t the same as taking control… also the Vogue thing about no second album yet makes me wonder if it’s all tied together or she just needs time.
