For nearly 1. 700 tourists at the Viva Wyndham Dominicus Beach resort in Bayahibe. the alarm came on a Friday. June 19. with smoke rolling over the Caribbean shoreline. A large fire tore through the hotel compound. sending dark plumes into the sky as flames overwhelmed thatched roofs of a main building and numerous smaller ones.
The evacuation began as the blaze escalated. Resort guests were moved to nearby hotels, while medical teams treated the injured. Three people were taken to medical facilities and six others were treated at the scene. the DAEH emergency service said in a statement. Those affected included guests, visitors and emergency responders.
The death of Francesca Valentino. 46. of Caserta. Italy. turned the disaster personal for people connected to the beach where she was staying. She had lived for several years in Bayahibe, met her husband there, and returned to visit. La Stampa reported that when the fire broke out. she joined tourists gathered on the beach. lost consciousness from smoke inhalation. and later died.
Wyndham Hotels and Resorts said hotel teams safely evacuated guests and staff. and that it was “saddened” that one guest perished. The company said the resort is independently owned and operated. and that the hotel is closed “until further notice. ” while autopsy results are awaited to determine the cause.
From above, the fire looked immediate and fast-moving. The emergency response picture matched what Dominican authorities said about why it spread. The country’s Emergency Operations Center (COE) said the preliminary observations indicate the fire moved rapidly due to the flammable nature of parts of the roof structures made of palm. as well as wind conditions.
The COE said its team and “various regional fire departments” contained the fire, and that tourist activities in Bayahibe and the surrounding area “remain unaffected” and continue “as normal.” Nearby Viva Wyndham Dominicus Palace—also part of the chain—did not sustain any damage.
The scale of tourism in the Dominican Republic makes this kind of incident land far beyond one property. The country is the Caribbean’s top tourist destination. attracting about 5.6 million visitors in the first five months of this year. A single day of chaos at a major beach resort. with dozens injured and one death. underscores how quickly vacation routines can be upended—and how tightly public confidence depends on investigations that explain what happened and how to prevent it from happening again.
As of now, the fire has been brought under control, and investigators are working. The COE said the blaze is under investigation, while the hotel said it will remain closed until further notice.

That’s awful. Tha… whatever material those roofs are, should’ve been fireproof.
I saw this and immediately thought it was like those “thatched roofs” catching like paper. 1,700 people evacuated?? That’s insane. Poor woman losing consciousness from smoke…
Wait so it says the resort is “independently owned and operated” but also Wyndham. So whose fault is it? Like if it’s independent then Wyndham can just shrug? Idk I don’t trust resorts anywhere.
Fires spread fast, yeah, but how do you even have that many tourists and the alarm comes on a Friday like… too late? Also “autopsy results awaited” for cause of fire?? I thought autopsy was about the person, not the flames. Either way tragic and I feel bad for everyone there, not just the one person they named.
