Celtics weigh Giannis deal without Jaylen Brown

Celtics Giannis – Boston’s reported interest in Giannis Antetokounmpo hinges on one key condition: a deal that includes Jaylen Brown is considered the only framework Milwaukee would likely accept. But even then, the asking price could strain Boston’s willingness to give up too

The Celtics’ pursuit of Giannis Antetokounmpo isn’t being discussed like a clean, one-player transaction. It’s being talked about like a relationship that only works if one person stays in the picture.

Jaylen Brown would reportedly need to be part of any deal involving the Celtics landing Antetokounmpo. with Milwaukee unlikely to accept an offer that tries to swap star power without him. Boston is said to be leaning toward a one-for-one swap: Antetokounmpo for Brown—two fellow All-Stars in their primes. Antetokounmpo is 31, while Brown is 29.

That “elephant in the room” is the sticking point at the center of the Celtics’ internal math. Celtics columnist Sam Amick wrote that the Celtics have gone to great lengths to avoid it. For Boston, the conversation would start and end with that one-for-one exchange, with Brown treated as non-negotiable.

The timing matters because Brown is coming off his best season yet, finishing sixth in MVP voting. His recent run helped Boston reach 56 wins while Jayson Tatum was rehabbing from offseason Achilles’ tendon surgery for most of the year. And yet even with the success, questions linger about how widely Brown is viewed as a true No. 1 scoring option in the NBA.

Those questions have teeth for the Bucks, too. It’s not clear whether Milwaukee would see Brown as the cornerstone of a build—or whether it would choose to rebuild by sending him elsewhere for young players and picks. Amick wrote that rival executives have recently offered two possibilities: constructing a team around Brown as a centerpiece. or using him as the centerpiece of a larger reset. Either way, it’s widely believed that Brown alone wouldn’t be enough.

If the Celtics can’t meet Milwaukee’s framework. the alternative could be even more complicated—because adding compensation on top of a Brown-based package may be too steep. Amick suggested that Boston could add up to three future first-round picks in the deal. a level of investment that would mark a real commitment to the swing.

The argument for going all-in is that Antetokounmpo is “known to be comfortable signing an extension with the Celtics. ” and that his resume is expected to justify the risk: he is a champion. a two-time MVP. and a former NBA Defensive Player of the Year. Amick also noted how often players of that caliber actually hit the market.

Boston, however, isn’t in the same kind of desperation that surrounded other contenders. Amick said the Celtics are favorites to win the Eastern Conference next season and aren’t as “desperate” as Miami is in terms of chasing star talent. The stakes for Boston are still real. though. because opportunities to acquire someone at Antetokounmpo’s level are rare—and because the Celtics’ own postseason history shows they may not be able to coast.

They’ve fallen to lower-seeded teams in the playoffs in three of the last four postseasons. In those series losses. the Celtics were competitive. and that’s part of the pressure point: if adding Antetokounmpo would push them over the top. how much is a title swing worth?. How big of a move will Boston actually make—and what will it cost to get past the “elephant in the room” that starts with Brown?.
