Trump unveils Qatar-donated Air Force One at Andrews

Trump unveils – President Donald Trump unveiled a Qatar-donated Boeing 747 now serving as Air Force One at Joint Base Andrews, after accepting the plane from Qatar’s royal family in May 2025. The transfer—described by Trump as a “flying White House” and a product of painstaki
The loudspeakers at Joint Base Andrews carried Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the U.S.A.” as President Donald Trump stepped down from the stairs onto the tarmac—onto a plane he calls unmatched, built around a gift from a foreign country.
On Friday. June 19. Trump rolled out the new Air Force One. a Boeing 747 donated by Qatar that has been retrofitted and is now painted in shiny red. white. and blue. Inside the hangar. he walked past the presidential seal and the words “United States of America” painted along the side before heading to Camp David for a Father’s Day weekend.
Trump told service members the work on the aircraft was extraordinary. “The workmanship of this plane is — when you see it, you won’t believe it,” he said. “Actually. the quality of the woods. the quality of the materials. the quality of the engines ‒ these engines are the finest in the world. Nothing like it.”.
He described the aircraft as “a flying White House at a level of luxury that’s nobody’s ever seen before,” using the occasion to frame the jet as both a showpiece and a response to concerns he has raised for years about Boeing’s pace.
The aircraft is a Boeing 747-B that Trump accepted from the Qatari royal family in May 2025. It replaces a Boeing 747-200 completed in 1990 that served as Air Force One for six presidents. dating back to George H. W. Bush. Trump has said he wanted the new plane operating by the Fourth of July holiday.
The donation itself is at the heart of the political fight around the jet. The transfer marked an unprecedented $400 million donation from a foreign country. and the aircraft later required extensive additional work to be turned into Air Force One. Democrats have accused Trump of violating the Constitution by accepting a personal gift from a foreign country without congressional approval.
Security questions also followed. The U.S. Air Force said converting the Qatari 747 was necessary to keep the president safe due to delays in getting the two new ones completed. In general. the Air Force said. military aircraft are bought new from manufacturers like Boeing to ensure they haven’t been sabotaged or fitted with spyware. Here. the Air Force said it had to develop new procedures to scan the Qatari 747 for possible security risks. and it can use that expertise to buy and screen used aircraft in the future.
Budget estimates are another fault line. Pentagon officials have said the total cost of the plane’s overhaul won’t exceed $400 million. Aviation experts cited by NBC News estimated the overhaul could cost more than $1 billion because of the installation of multiple top-secret systems.
Even as Trump celebrated the plane, the Air Force’s timeline places it in a temporary role. The Qatari-gift jet isn’t expected to operate as Air Force One beyond 2028. It will serve as a transition Air Force One while Boeing builds two new presidential 747s expected to be completed in 2028—Trump’s final year in office. After that bridge service, the VC-25B Bridge will go to Trump’s future presidential library.
Standing by the aircraft, Trump said, “There’s never been a plane like this ever built, and there will never be a plane like this built again,” adding that it includes features “that no other plane can ever have, including the ones that are being built.”
The new jet’s dimensions and performance also differ from the outgoing plane. It stretches 18 feet. 4 inches longer than the outgoing Air Force One. can carry more weight. and can fly slightly faster and farther. It is 22 years newer than the old aircraft. Both planes hold about the same number of passengers and have the same height.
But Trump said the most visible difference is inside. The retrofit includes creamy tan and leather furnishings. rugs. and artwork designed by Cabinet Alberto Pinto. the famed French interior design firm. Trump returned to the idea of change again when describing the exterior color scheme. The red. white. and blue paint—helped design by Trump—signals a shift from the iconic white and two-toned blue livery designed by former first lady Jacqueline Kennedy.
“We like the baby blue, but it was time for a change,” Trump said.
Later in remarks, Trump thanked the emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, for the donation. “I want to thank the emir of Qatar. He’s a fantastic guy.” Trump also framed the upgrade as part of a broader argument he has made about Boeing’s slowness.
After his first administration in 2018 awarded Boeing a $3.9 billion contract to build two new Air Force One jets, Trump repeatedly complained the company was too slow to deliver. He also said the previous Air Force One wasn’t good enough compared with aircraft used by other heads of state.
“I said to myself, ‘These countries, they have a lot of respect for us, a lot.’ And yet they have a plane that’s much better and much newer,” Trump said. “It’s a little ridiculous out there.”
The sequence of events leaves little ambiguity about what Trump is showing—and what he is trying to control. The plane arrives after a foreign donation of $400 million. then moves through a retrofit process the Air Force says required new security scanning procedures because the aircraft wasn’t being bought new. At the same time. the jet’s planned role is strictly bridging a gap until Boeing’s next aircraft arrive. meaning every political and security question becomes part of the runway story. not something left behind.
As Trump walked through the moment with “God Bless the U.S.A.” playing. the aircraft he unveiled carried more than symbolism. It carried a bipartisan controversy over ethics. an Air Force account of how it mitigated security risks. and a hard deadline toward 2028—when the bridge will end and the next generation of presidential jets is expected to take over.

Qatar donated an Air Force One… I don’t get it.
They really let a foreign country give us a 747 and then call it a “flying White House”? Sounds like a headline bait thing but still, weird vibes.
So wait, it’s a Boeing 747 like the old ones but “shiny red white and blue”?? I’m confused because Boeing is American right, so why are we thanking Qatar like it’s a charity drive. Also the Lee Greenwood song is kinda nice though.
Can’t believe they’re playing “God Bless the U.S.A.” while the plane was donated by Qatar’s royal family. I mean… what did we trade for it? Like are they buying access or something? Father’s Day weekend too like it’s some gift wrap situation. I guess the “quality of the woods” is supposed to make it sound wholesome but it’s still from a foreign deal.
