Suede sneakers storm in, pushing staples aside
Search interest for “men’s suede sneakers” has jumped 500% over the past year as TikTok and Instagram amplify the look and styling moves away from traditionally spring/summer staples. A stylist says the trend is driven by an “international student” aesthetic,
For years, certain pairs have acted like default choices—Birkenstocks for easy comfort and Air Force 1s for everyday cool. This summer, though, the conversation feels like it’s turning elsewhere.
Suede sneakers—fuzzy, low-top kicks—are suddenly everywhere, and men are especially drawn to the style. “The specific vibe they’re going for isn’t classic American preppy (think Vineyard Vines). It’s more European,” stylist Alexandra Ballard told Business Insider. “They want that ‘international student’ aesthetic, or to look like the well-traveled guy who’s effortlessly put-together. Elegant but not stiff.”.
The shift isn’t just about a logo or a specific model. When it comes to suede sneakers, Ballard says the trend is more about material and look than brand signaling. “After all, the men’s shoe trend is all about elevating simple looks. They have that refined, sophisticated feel without sacrificing any comfort,” Ballard said about the sneakers.
The demand is showing up in search data. Searches for “men’s suede sneakers” are up 500% and rising over the past year, according to Google Trends. TikTok and Instagram have helped feed that momentum with posts where men share their favorite pairs. tips for wearing them. and claims that the style has replaced the famed Adidas Samba.
Celebrities have added their own visibility. Ludacris has embraced suede sneakers everywhere from Paris Fashion Week to the 2026 American Music Awards, where he wore suede sneakers.
Even the way suede signals status is being reframed. Ballard ties part of the appeal to what suede represents: a classic signal of high-end style that doesn’t demand attention. “Suede evokes chicness without looking flashy or overly expensive,” she said.
And there’s a reason many buyers appear to be leaning into “old-school.” Ballard points to suede’s retro association with the fashion of the ’60s and ’70s, adding that “old-school is in right now, inside and outside the fashion world.”
Versatility is doing its share of the work, too. Suede sneakers can be styled with trousers and a blazer to dress down an office look—what Ballard describes as “Italian menswear nonchalance.” They can also be paired with jeans and a T-shirt to elevate a casual Sunday outfit.
It may sound backward, but Ballard argues suede belongs in summer. “Summer is the safest season to wear suede shoes,” she said. “Suede’s biggest enemies are water. slush. and salt. which are all winter problems.” She also notes suede often comes in neutral shades like tan and brown. which pair well with summer outfits and pieces such as linen trousers and light chinos.
Not every brand is trying to be luxury to win shoppers over. Some of the most popular options come from Puma, Nike, and Steve Madden, while luxury brands like Axel Arigato, Dries Van Noten, Loewe, and Fear of God also offer suede sneakers.
If you’re trying to join the trend without going overboard, Ballard suggests starting understated. “Silhouette-wise, nothing too chunky. A slimmer, more minimal shape is the way to go,” she said.
The final idea is simple: let the shoes carry the outfit. Ballard says your suede sneakers “do the heavy lifting.” She adds, “Throw [suede sneakers] on with shorts and a loose polo or a linen tee, and you’re already looking more put-together than most guys at the same event.”

Suede sneakers look like they’d get ruined in 2 seconds lol.
500%?? That seems fake like who is searching this much. My cousin just buys whatever TikTok says is “European” now.
I saw “international student aesthetic” and thought they meant like… school uniforms?? But then it’s just shoes. Also suede replacing Adidas Samba sounds made up, Samba is forever. Bet this is all ads disguised as culture.
Ludacris wearing them at some awards is all I needed to hear, honestly. If he wore it, people gonna copy. I don’t even care about Birkenstocks vs Air Force 1 vs whatever, suede just looks expensive and soft. But also how are they “comfortable” if suede is fuzzy? Like does it breathe or just get dirty faster? Summer trend gonna die by September anyway.
