CBS/YouGov finds Americans split on Iran war, Trump approval slips

A CBS News/YouGov poll released June 21 found 57% of Americans say the war in Iran created more problems than it solved, while 78% say the U.S. should end the conflict now. The same survey put President Donald Trump’s job approval at 38%, and tied attitudes on

The first Iranian peace talks ended in Switzerland on June 22 with a roadmap aimed at reaching a final deal within 60 days. Back in the U.S. the questions fueling the next phase of the debate look less like a countdown and more like a mismatch between what Americans want now and what the conflict has already started to disrupt.

In a CBS News/YouGov poll released June 21. the majority of respondents said the war in Iran created more problems than it solved. In the survey of 2,519 U.S. adults conducted June 17-19, 57% held that view, compared with 21% who believed the war solved more than it caused. Another 21% answered “neither.” The poll’s margin of error was plus or minus 2.4 percentage points.

That split becomes sharper when Americans are asked what they want the U.S. to do next. The poll found 78% of Americans thought the U.S. should end the conflict now, while 22% said the U.S. should continue until Iran gives up more. Support for ending the war now ran high even inside party lines: 60% of Republicans and 56% of MAGA Republicans agreed the U.S. should end the war now.

Gas prices were part of how the survey answers moved. The poll found people were more likely to say the U.S. should end the war now if they also said the rise in gas prices has been difficult.

Trump’s job approval appears to reflect that uneasy mix. The poll found that 38% of Americans approve of President Donald Trump’s job performance, up slightly from May’s poll. The uptick was helped by non-college White Americans who believe gas prices will fall.

Even with the small improvement, Trump’s approval has been net negative for over a year. It has fluctuated, but trended more negative over the last several months—an erosion the report links to the war’s disruption to the global oil supply chain, pushing prices up and weighing on his approval.

With peace talks now tied to a 60-day roadmap. the numbers show why the tone of the debate in the U.S. is not waiting for the final deal. The war is widely described as having produced more problems than solutions, and a large majority wants the U.S. to stop the conflict now—while Trump’s approval remains trapped in the gap between small polling gains and a broader drag that voters associate with higher gas prices.

For now, the political and economic signals are running side by side: Americans say the U.S. should end the conflict now. the talks are working toward a timeline to reach a final agreement within 60 days. and Trump’s approval sits at 38% as the fallout of rising prices continues to shape how people connect the conflict to everyday costs.
