Ty Simpson leans on Stafford as Rams heir

After the Rams drafted Ty Simpson to succeed Matthew Stafford, Simpson says he’s leaning into Stafford’s steady guidance—asking questions and calling him “the MVP for a reason” as he settles into the offense.

Ty Simpson didn’t sound like a rookie trying to impress. He sounded like someone grateful to be learning fast.

When the Rams selected quarterback Ty Simpson to be Matthew Stafford’s successor in April, it came as a surprise to many. Simpson, though, was already aware of Los Angeles’ interest in him, even if he denied it publicly until well after the night he was drafted.

Now, as he settles in, Simpson is leaning on the man he’ll eventually replace. Stafford has said Simpson hasn’t been shy about asking questions, and Simpson clearly agrees with that approach. “I hope I’m not annoying him,” Simpson said recently, via Gary Klein of the L.A. Times, “but I really appreciate the big brother kind of role he’s playing in my development.”.

Simpson went further in his praise. calling Stafford “the MVP for a reason.” He described what makes that guidance sink in: “Everything he does. he’s so just aware of everything. aware of how everything works. ” Simpson said. “I really appreciate him and Stetson taking me in and answering all the questions I have.”.

The Rams’ plan is now about reps—especially with Simpson still getting comfortable with the scheme. The No. 13 overall pick of this year’s draft. Simpson is likely to receive extensive reps during preseason games as he continues to get his feet wet in the league. Under head coach Sean McVay. the Rams traditionally have not played starters in preseason games. which makes those reps even more central to how Simpson’s early stretch will be measured.

  1. So basically Ty Simpson is sucking up to Stafford? Kinda weird but also respect I guess. “MVP for a reason” sounds like he’s already trying to be Stafford 2.0.

  2. Wait I thought the Rams drafted someone else to replace Stafford? Like didn’t they trade for a QB? Also preseason is when you see who’s really ready, so if they’re not playing starters then this whole “reps” thing doesn’t make sense to me.

  3. Stafford “big brother” role? That’s nice and all but I’m just wondering if Simpson can actually handle pressure when the defense starts disguising stuff. They keep saying it’s about reps, but McVay always has some scheme thing and then it’s like… is he ready or just getting babysat by Stafford? Also everyone was surprised at the pick, so I’m still skeptical.
