Beyoncé explains – In a new 7-minute video titled “The Blueprint,” Beyoncé shares how Jay-Z—using family help and support from her Cécred brand—combed out his signature locs, explaining the choice behind it and tying the moment to their daughter Blue Ivy’s own hair journey. The

Jay-Z’s locs didn’t disappear in one dramatic moment—they came undone over days, with patience, family members nearby, and Beyoncé narrating the process like it mattered more than the makeover itself.

In a 7-minute video titled “The Blueprint. ” posted June 21 by Beyoncé’s Cécred hair care brand. the Grammy-winning singer gives fans a close look at Jay-Z’s hair transformation: the rapper combing out the large locs. or “wicks. ” that he grew out years ago. The video’s title is a direct nod to Jay-Z’s 2001 album.

Beyoncé opens by framing the comb-out as something Jay-Z had been planning for months. “Everyone wants to know the details of Jay’s hair transformation. Jay told me a few months ago he was planning on combing out his locs for the Philly show with The Roots. He wanted to do this in honor of his father,” she says in the beginning of the video.

She also describes her own doubt. At first. Beyoncé said she wasn’t convinced he’d be able to comb out locs that had been over eight years in the making. But she says the work unfolded as a labor of love across several days. with the entire family helping him—while still honoring the locs rather than rushing to erase them.

The reason, Beyoncé says, reaches deeper than the schedule or the stage. She explains that Jay-Z began growing the locs to reflect their household in a way that their then 14-year-old daughter. Blue Ivy Carter. could relate to. Beyoncé says Blue Ivy struggled with confidence about her hair when she was around 5 years old. and that experience pushed Jay-Z to embrace his natural texture and encourage her to do the same.

“Hair grows. People grow. So the transformation can be emotional,” Beyoncé says.

The video then shifts from explanation to scene. It shows Blue embracing her hair as Jay-Z grew his out. and later shows the family joining in on the takedown. Beyoncé ends the clip with footage of Jay-Z’s performance at The Roots festival on May 30 in Philadelphia. where he debuted an afro that quickly pulled attention.

“I think the key ingredients are patience and love,” Beyoncé says during the video. “It wasn’t just one person who removed his locs. It was a family affair.”

The domestic focus comes as Jay-Z prepares for milestone celebrations tied to his music. The video notes that Jay-Z plans to take the stage in celebration of the 30th anniversary of his debut album “Reasonable Doubt” and the 25th anniversary of “The Blueprint.”

Beyoncé’s own public appearances have been more limited lately. After appearing at the Met Gala on May 4, fans have been waiting for updates on her still unannounced “Act III” project.
