Bill Gates to testify as Epstein files expand

When Bill Gates walks into a congressional hearing room on Wednesday, it won’t be the first time he’s faced scrutiny over Jeffrey Epstein. But it will be the latest—another entry in a widening investigation that has pulled powerful names into the same uncomfortable orbit.

Gates. the billionaire Microsoft co-founder who chairs the Gates Foundation. is scheduled to testify behind closed doors before members of the House Oversight Committee investigating files related to Epstein. The committee has interviewed multiple witnesses in this manner, with transcripts often released later.

House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer. a Republican. formally requested Gates testify after Gates appeared multiple times in a trove of documents released by the Justice Department as part of its Epstein probe. Those files read. in their own way. like a who’s who of powerful men spanning tech. finance. politics and other industries. Many have denied involvement in Epstein’s crimes. while some acknowledged maintaining or forming friendships with him after his history of sexual abuse came to light.

For Gates, the documents include calendar entries for meetings between him and Epstein, email correspondence about philanthropic projects, and photos of Gates at events that Epstein also attended.

The professional relationship, according to the documents, began in 2011—three years after Epstein pleaded guilty in Florida to soliciting prostitution from a minor—and lasted until at least late 2014.

The stakes of that timeline are hard to ignore. Epstein was federally indicted in July 2019 on charges of sex trafficking of minors and conspiracy to commit sex trafficking of minors. The Justice Department alleged that Epstein built a vast network of underage girls. some as young as 14. whom he abused sexually between 2002 and 2005. He died by suicide in a New York jail cell in 2019 while awaiting trial.

Gates has not been accused of wrongdoing connected to Epstein. He has denied any knowledge of Epstein’s abuse of girls, and said he and Epstein met only to discuss philanthropy. Gates has also called his association with Epstein “a huge mistake.”

The Gates Foundation’s own disclosures have echoed the tension. In February. it acknowledged that a small number of employees had met with Epstein based on his “claims that he could mobilize significant philanthropic resources for global health.” The foundation said they never created a charitable fund together. and that the foundation made no payments to Epstein. Foundation CEO Mark Suzman commissioned an external review in March to examine the foundation’s past engagement with Epstein.

Behind the public statements, the personal fallout has also been part of the record. Both Gates and his ex-wife, Melinda French Gates, have said his association with Epstein created tension in their marriage.

The committee’s work has also swept in other prominent political figures. In a separate closed-door deposition in February. former President Bill Clinton faced more than six hours of questioning from lawmakers about his association with Epstein more than two decades ago. The documents described Epstein visiting the White House several times during Clinton’s presidency and Clinton flying occasionally on Epstein’s private jet.

Clinton said he had seen no signs of Epstein’s sexual abuse and stopped associating with him long before Epstein’s 2008 guilty plea. Clinton has not been accused of wrongdoing connected to Epstein.

Democrats on the House committee have pressed for testimony from President Donald Trump, a Republican who had his own relationship with Epstein. Republicans have said they have not come across any evidence that Trump did anything wrong during his well-documented friendship with Epstein.

As Gates prepares for Wednesday’s closed-door session, the investigation continues to turn high-level connections into detailed questions—how meetings happened, what was discussed, and what people knew when the relationship was ongoing.

  1. I didn’t even know they were still digging into this. If there are calendar entries and emails then it’s not “just rumors” I guess. Wild that it’s tech guys involved too.

  2. Behind closed doors sounds like they already know the answer and just doing theater. Also the timeline says 2011-2014… but wasn’t Epstein in and out of jail way before that? This is all so messy.

  3. Here we go again. Next they’ll say it was all “philanthropy” like that makes it normal. I saw somebody say Gates was only at events like once, but then this article says photos too?? Idk what to believe anymore, just feels like everybody knew something and nobody did anything.
