AJ Brown traded to Patriots after long wait

The Philadelphia Eagles have traded AJ Brown to the New England Patriots, ending months of speculation. The deal sends a 2028 first-round pick and a 2027 fifth-round selection to Philadelphia, with the timing shaped by salary-cap complications after June 1.

AJ Brown finally got the reunion he’s been hinting at for years.

The Philadelphia Eagles are sending the three-time Pro Bowl selection to the New England Patriots. completing a trade that had been widely expected for weeks and delayed until after June 1 because of the complexities of the NFL salary cap. New England will receive Brown for a 2028 first-round pick and a fifth-round selection in 2027.

The financial timing mattered. By waiting until May had ended, the Eagles can split $43.5 million in dead money between 2026 and 2027, a move that gives the team more flexibility as it plans its next roster steps.

Brown’s arrival in Foxborough immediately reshapes New England’s receiving picture, stepping into the vacancy left after Stefon Diggs departed. Diggs had been crucial for Patriots quarterback Drake Maye in 2025, but he was released following the Patriots’ Super Bowl loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

It’s a homecoming of sorts as well. Brown’s path in the NFL previously ran through Mike Vrabel’s Tennessee Titans. Under Vrabel—now the Patriots head coach—Brown became a budding star. averaging 69.7 receiving yards per game over his first three seasons in Nashville before being dealt to Philadelphia for the 18th pick of the 2022 NFL Draft.

Brown won a Super Bowl with the Eagles in 2024, but 2025 wasn’t as smooth. He and quarterback Jalen Hurts struggled at times to stay on the same page, and Brown’s production fell. He averaged more than 80 receiving yards per game with Philadelphia in 2022, 2023 and 2024; that number dropped to 66.9 last season.

There were also personal moments that became part of the wider story around his relationship with the team’s quarterback. Hurts was a no-show at Brown’s recent wedding to Kelsey Riley.

The Eagles, meanwhile, didn’t just react to the Brown situation—they built toward life without him. Philadelphia drafted USC wideout Makai Lemon in the first round of April’s NFL Draft. signed Hollywood Brown and Elijah Moore. and traded for the Green Bay Packers’ Dontayvion Wicks. DeVonta Smith remains in the lineup too, returning as one of the NFC’s most dangerous targets.

New England’s receiver room is crowded already. Brown joins Kayshon Boutte, Mack Hollins and Kyle Williams, and the Patriots previously added free-agent Romeo Doubs—still 26 and coming off a 724-yard season.

The sequence is stark: Brown’s fall in Philadelphia production lines up with the Eagles’ pre-planning, while the Patriots’ roster moves align with their need to replace the offensive chemistry Diggs provided for Drake Maye in 2025.

For Brown, the offseason’s “worst-kept secret” finally turns into a new chapter—one that takes him from Philadelphia’s uncertainty back to the sideline of the coach who once helped make him a star.
