YouTube Music adds alphabet sorting—after years of asking

YouTube Music is rolling out new playlist sorting options, including Title, Artist, and Album, in addition to existing choices like Manual, Top Voted, Newest First, and Oldest First. The change appears to be a server-side rollout and is reaching users graduall
If you’ve ever stared at a sprawling YouTube Music playlist and thought, “Why can’t I just sort this alphabetically?” you’re about to get your wish. The app is rolling out new sorting options—three of them—bringing playlist organization that fans have been asking for for years.
On YouTube Music, users are now seeing three additional ways to sort playlists: Title, Artist, and Album. That comes alongside the four sorting options that already existed: Manual, Top Voted, Newest First, and Oldest First.
The update isn’t tied neatly to a single app release. A Reddit user first spotted the change while running YouTube Music version 9.20.52 on Android. but the rollout appears to be server-side. That means you can be on the exact same version and still not see the new sorting options yet. A wider rollout is expected over the coming weeks.
For some users, this is the kind of feature that feels almost painfully basic. Plenty of reactions have been positive. but others can’t help pointing out what took so long: Spotify and Apple Music have offered alphabetical sorting for over a decade. while YouTube Music’s absence of it has remained a frequent sore spot.
And even as the playlist sorting finally improves, YouTube Music’s broader business moves haven’t stopped. The platform has been adding features lately while also raising its prices. Premium subscribers can now generate AI playlists by describing a mood or genre—but the individual plan went up to $12 a month earlier this year. so the new functionality arrives alongside higher costs.
For anyone stuck with playlists that feel impossible to browse, the practical takeaway is simple: keep an eye on your app updates, and if the new sorting options aren’t there yet, it may just mean the rollout hasn’t reached your account.

About time lol. I swear that “Manual” sorting was like a joke.
So they finally add alphabetical sorting… but my app still glitches like crazy. Also why did the price go up again? Feels like they’re just nickel and diming.
Wait it’s not even in everyone yet? That’s weird. I thought it would be a normal update not “server-side” like some random switch. Next they’ll be adding sorting for the folders you can’t even use.
Apple and Spotify had alphabet sorting forever and YouTube acted like it’s some new invention. I don’t really get the hype, I just want the songs to show in order without having to touch anything. And now they’re doing AI playlists too—does that mean it changes your library or like recommends stuff??
