When the thunderstorms rolled into Morgantown and lightning pushed the game into a long pause, West Virginia baseball fans were left watching more than the action on Wagener Field at Kendrick Family Ballpark. The storm also proved dangerous off the field.
West Virginia Athletics said five people were injured after heavy winds blew an event tent over during the Saturday Morgantown Super Regional between the Mountaineers and Cal Poly. The tent incident happened in an adjacent parking lot to Wagener Field.
In a statement, West Virginia Athletics thanked first responders for quickly securing the area and treating injured spectators. The statement added that while it was a great day for Mountaineer baseball. the school’s thoughts were with those involved. The school also reported that Saturday’s delay lasted more than an hour and a half in the eighth inning. driven by weather that included thunderstorms and lightning.
University Police confirmed the injury toll, saying five people were transported to a local hospital for treatment. The school said it had been in touch with area health care providers to ensure those affected are supported in their recovery.
Wren Baker, West Virginia’s athletic director, also turned to social media after the game, asking for prayers for the fans who were injured in a post on X.
On the field, the day still moved forward. No. 16 West Virginia defeated Cal Poly 17-1 to complete the sweep of the Morgantown Super Regional and advance to the program’s first College World Series. Ben Lumsden and Tyrus Hall hit back-to-back home runs as part of a seven-run second inning.
The scheduling picture now shifts to Omaha. West Virginia is set to open College World Series play against Troy either Friday, June 12 or Saturday, June 13. The NCAA has not released official start times and dates for the College World Series.

How is a tent even allowed to be that close to the field…
Praying for them for real. But also like why were fans just standing there during lightning? I know it’s weather but come on.
Isn’t this the same WVU that always says they’re prepared? I saw lightning and wind all over the place the other day, but a tent just flips like nothing. Maybe they should’ve moved everyone further back instead of letting it happen in the parking lot.
This is why I don’t trust stadiums lol. One minute it’s baseball, next minute you got people getting transported. Also the article says it was during the 8th inning like that matters?? I’m confused on the timeline, but I hope everyone’s okay and they don’t play Troy until it’s officially cleared or whatever.
