When the wrong-way Cadillac Escalade entered Interstate 93 northbound from Exit 15B shortly before midnight Saturday, it set off a chain of impacts that ended with a death, multiple vehicles involved, and a family rushed to a Boston-area hospital for evaluation.
Massachusetts State Police said the incident occurred just before midnight on I-93 northbound near Exit 15A. A preliminary investigation found that Antone Carvalho, 81, of Somerset, was driving a Cadillac Escalade when he entered I-93 north from Exit 15B, continuing south in the northbound lanes.
As Carvalho drove the wrong way. the drivers of an Audi A4 and a Honda Odyssey carrying a family of four attempted to avoid the SUV and collided with each other. State Police said. Authorities said the family of four was taken to a Boston-area hospital for evaluation. State Police did not say whether anyone in the Audi was injured or transported to a hospital. and they have not released an update on the family’s condition.
Shortly after that initial crash, Carvalho collided head-on with a Chevrolet Cruze. Both Carvalho and the Cruze driver were transported to Boston-area hospitals, where the Cruze driver died from his injuries, according to State Police.
The victim’s identity was not immediately available, but State Police said he was a Haverhill man in his 20s. Carvalho will be issued a summons to appear in court at a later date, State Police said, though authorities have not yet announced what charges he may face.
The crash marked the third fatal car incident in the last week involving wrong-way driving in Massachusetts. Last Saturday. a Connecticut man driving on the wrong side of I-90 West in Millbury died after crashing head-on into another car. State Police said. A couple days later. a person was killed and another was injured in a wrong-way crash on I-290 in Northborough on Wednesday.

I-93 Exit 15A/15B always confused me, like the signs come too fast, so maybe he just took the wrong exit and didn’t realize? Either way that’s on someone for sure. Also “third fatal wrong-way in a week”?? makes you think they’re not doing enough checkpoints or something.
