John Wayne’s ‘Sons of Katie Elder’ Hits 100%

More than 60 years after its 1965 release, John Wayne’s The Sons of Katie Elder is still pulling its weight—earning a place among the greatest Western movies of all time and posting a rare perfect 100% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes.

For a film released in 1965, The Sons of Katie Elder doesn’t feel like it’s collecting dust. It feels like it’s still finding new screens—and new arguments—more than six decades later.

The John Wayne Western has landed on Rotten Tomatoes’ list of the greatest Western movies ever made. It also carries a prize that very few movies manage to claim: a perfect 100% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Directed by Henry Hathaway, the story centers on John Elder, played by John Wayne. He’s the eldest of four brothers, and the reunion they never expected starts when their mother dies. After returning to their hometown, the brothers discover the family ranch has been lost under suspicious circumstances. Their father’s fate looks even worse—he may have been murdered.

From there, the plot tightens into a pursuit of truth and justice. The Elder brothers take to the trail to uncover what happened, and why. Dean Martin, Earl Holliman and Michael Anderson Jr. appear alongside Wayne as the other brothers, while Martha Hyer, George Kennedy and Dennis Hopper complete the supporting cast.

The movie’s staying power isn’t just tied to nostalgia or the familiar gravity of Wayne’s name. Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer credit—100% from critics—puts The Sons of Katie Elder in a small, specific club: it is one of just 11 John Wayne movies to reach a perfect critics rating.

That kind of rating changes how people talk about a film. It pulls the spotlight away from the usual shorthand of “one of the greats” and turns it into something sharper: a standout that critics have agreed on. cleanly. Its mix of family drama. mystery and classic frontier action has continued to draw attention. even as other Wayne Westerns often dominate conversations—like The Searchers. True Grit and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.

There’s a particular steadiness to the way the elements line up. Brothers come home after their mother’s death. the ranch is taken under suspicious circumstances. their father may be murdered. and the story drives forward from loyalty and revenge toward justice—while Wayne leads the film and the supporting cast keeps the pressure on.

The result is a Western that critics and Western fans keep returning to for the same reasons: loyalty, revenge and family, anchored by Wayne’s commanding performance. After all these years, it’s not just remembered. It’s rated as perfect.

  1. 100% critics score? That’s wild. I swear Rotten Tomatoes is always playing favorites though.

  2. I watched this like forever ago and didn’t remember it being that good. Is it the one where the ranch gets taken and then it’s like a murder mystery? Sounds like a Netflix plot lol.

  3. Henry Hathaway directed it?? I thought John Wayne directed everything himself because he’s on every poster. Also Dean Martin in a western feels random like wasn’t he in comedy stuff? Maybe I’m mixing it up with another movie.

  4. “Greatest Western movies ever made” lists are always kinda fake but 100% is 100%. I’m confused though, because I swear I’ve seen people say The Searchers is better and this one gets compared to it. Like how can both be top if critics are agreeing on this one? Either way John Wayne still carries.
