Between the on-field flare-ups, Contreras has also been showing a different kind of urgency—one tied to his home country. During this week, he has been openly emotional about Venezuela as two earthquakes have killed more than 1,700 people. He has been raising money and pushing out word for relief efforts.

His reaction reached its most personal moment on Monday night. Sitting in the Boston dugout after hitting a home run earlier, Contreras bawled. When he signed with the Red Sox over the winter, he told the organization he would “play with fire.”

That fire has burned in more ways than one. Still, the Red Sox have not complained about his emotions, and they’ve kept pace even as the month heated up. Boston’s momentum has included a four-game sweep on the Yankees as the team pushed through a hot close to June.
