On Monday, the White House didn’t just react to a new campaign ad from George Conway. It went for the jugular.

In the ad. Conway—running as a Democratic candidate in New York—promises that if elected he will work to impeach President Donald Trump and “put him ‘away for good.’” Conway’s message in the spot is laced with a specific. punishing image: he tells voters that when he’s done. the only thing left of Trump’s name will be “the orange jumpsuit you’re gonna have to wear in prison.”.

He also points to the politics of consequence, laying out where he says the next fight will happen. “And you see that building back there? That’s where we’re gonna hold your third and final impeachment trial, the one that’s gonna put you away for good,” Conway says in the ad.

The response from the White House came quickly, and with uncommon heat. In a statement to Fox News Digital. a White House spokesperson dismissed Conway as mentally unfit for the moment he’s trying to shape. “Lightweight George Conway is a stupid person’s idea of a smart person,” the spokesperson said. The spokesperson added that Conway suffers from a “severe and debilitating disease known as Trump Derangement syndrome. ” claiming it “has melted his brain and made him crazy in the head.”.

Conway is no stranger to attacking Trump directly—he has been among the president’s harshest critics across both of his terms. He is also deeply tied to Trump-world in a way that makes his turn particularly personal: Conway is the ex-husband of former Trump senior counselor Kellyanne Conway.

Before entering this race, Conway co-founded the anti-Trump political action committee The Lincoln Project. And now, he is aiming to replace retiring Rep. Jerry Nadler (D) in New York’s 12th Congressional District.

The back-and-forth lands in a campaign setting where words are being used not just to criticize policy. but to dramatize what Conway says the country should do next. The ad promises impeachment and prison imagery; the White House answers with insults and a medicalized dismissal. In the space between them. voters in New York’s 12th District are being asked to decide which version of the political future feels closer to the truth.
