For White Castle fans who have spent years ordering the same iconic bite, the next craving may be a different one—at least, on paper. The fast-food chain is officially expanding its menu with a vegetarian option priced at $2.49: the Southwest Veggie Slider.
The new slider is built around a patty made from six vegetables—sweet potatoes. black beans. corn. red bell peppers. onions. and carrot—seasoned with chipotle and barbecue flavors. It’s wrapped in a crispy brown rice coating, then finished with a slice of jalapeno cheese. Customers can substitute cheddar or American.
“We Cravers have been pretty vocal about wanting an alternative to traditional meat Sliders that doesn’t compromise on flavor. ” White Castle’s chief marketing officer. Jamie Richardson. said in a statement. “That prompted our menu innovation team to prioritize finding a craveable alternative. and we believe the Southwest Veggie Slider delivers on that in a big way.”.
The chain’s path to the final recipe started with a test period last summer. during which White Castle gathered “consumer insights.” Those insights were used to guide its “innovation team” as it narrowed down the flavors. ingredients. and overall profile customers wanted in a nonmeat slider. the company said in a news release.
Once the feedback was processed through what White Castle calls its “innovation pipeline,” the chain landed on a veggie patty developed by Dr. Praeger’s, described by the company as a frozen vegan and vegetarian food producer.
The Southwest Veggie Slider now joins White Castle’s existing lineup of handheld burgers that includes beef, chicken, and fish options.
Even as the veggie slider moves into the spotlight, White Castle is also preparing for growth beyond its core menu. The first White Castle is coming to Texas.
That broader push lands alongside another recent recognition for the brand’s devoted community: Palm Beach Man Evan Darnell, a Delray Beach resident, was inducted into White Castle Cravers Hall of Fame in Columbus, Ohio.
