Cost concerns stall opening of Weija Paediatric Hospital

The Ministry of Health says World Bank procurement concerns stalled progress on the Weija Paediatric Hospital, prompting calls for patience while issues are addressed.

The Ministry of Health says it is working to resolve delays to the opening of the Weija Paediatric Hospital after residents staged a protest demanding its operationalisation.. In a statement issued on 5th May 2026, the ministry said the project, funded by the World Bank and started in 2023, had been due for completion in December 2025.. However, concerns raised by the lender in 2024 over procurement practices have stalled progress.. According to the ministry,

the World Bank flagged cases of misprocurement, including claims that some medical equipment had been priced at up to 11 times their actual cost.. As a result, it declined to settle outstanding payments linked to the project.. The ministry said it had engaged stakeholders and was ready to commission the hospital, but the contractor halted the process.. It insisted that all unresolved issues be addressed before granting access to the facility.. The delay has drawn

public frustration, with residents in Weija demonstrating over the continued closure of a hospital seen as vital for children’s healthcare in the area.. The ministry acknowledged the importance of the facility, describing it as critical to improving specialised care for children within Ghana’s health system.. It said discussions were ongoing to resolve the impasse and ensure the hospital becomes operational.. The ministry also appealed to residents and the wider public to remain patient while efforts

continue to address the situation.
