For a lot of families. the idea of handing a child’s education to an AI tutor sounds risky—something closer to a science experiment than schooling. Most Americans don’t trust AI. People point to its failures. from basic errors like getting “safe toppings for pizza” wrong to skepticism about AI music that doesn’t land the way it should.
But for some of the nation’s richest households, those worries don’t stop the pivot. Instead, they’re paying large sums to replace traditional classrooms with AI-led instruction, pitching it as a faster route to learning and adaptability.
Companies like Forge Prep and Alpha School are charging families tens of thousands of dollars to enroll kids in AI-based teaching that they describe as “interactive project-based workshops.” Silicon Valley has been a major adopter of the model. with venture capital investors among the most visible customers.
Shaun Johnson, a San Francisco-based venture capitalist, said he plans to send his son to a $75,000 year Alpha Kindergarten. He told the Wall Street Journal that he recognizes education is “likely broken the way it is” and that entrepreneurs will try to fix it. He added. “You want someone to be able to think on their feet and navigate the world. not necessarily a recitation of facts in a particular discipline.”.
Still, there’s a hard tension inside that promise. It’s unclear how AI—already known for being prone to agreeing with users—would reliably train children to think on their feet and navigate the world. If the system responds too smoothly, too quickly, or too confidently, the skill being practiced may be something else entirely.
Alpha School also brings another flashpoint into focus: what the classroom will avoid. Alpha School co-founder MacKenzie Price said she plans to keep “hot-button social issues” out of the classroom. In the current political climate. that kind of language can be read broadly enough to include women’s rights. America’s history of slavery. and the immigrant past. Even if it’s presented as manageable for kindergarten. Alpha School’s reach can extend far beyond early grades—going through high school in some locations.
One of the biggest missing pieces is evidence. Companies like Forge also don’t share performance metrics. Without outcomes data—grades, progress measures, or other indicators—there’s no way to verify whether AI-guided private schools are improving educational outcomes.
The contradiction is difficult to ignore: families willing to pay tens of thousands of dollars are embracing AI to teach their children, while the companies themselves are not making it easy to answer the most basic question—whether this approach works better than what it’s replacing.

I don’t even get why anyone would pay that when public school teachers already have no resources. But maybe this AI is better than the ones that make up stuff? Like I read somewhere AI can be “safe” and not say weird stuff, so… idk. Seems like the rich are just buying the future and the rest of us get stuck.
It’s probably fine, though. Like, people act like AI is gonna teach your kid to worship the pizza toppings or whatever, but it’s the parents choosing it. I mean they said “interative project-based workshops” which sounds kinda like normal school? Also $75k is such a weird number… is that including therapy or snacks or tuition or like updates? Either way if it’s from Silicon Valley then it’s definitely gonna be hacked somehow, just watch.
