Jonah Hill’s comedy “Cut Off” was supposed to hit theaters on July 17—setting up a direct collision with Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated “The Odyssey” adaptation. starring Matt Damon. Anne Hathaway. Zendaya. Tom Holland and others. By Friday evening. the conversation had shifted from box-office matchups to a new question: was the movie really headed for a release at all?.

Warner Bros. moved quickly to shut down claims that “Cut Off” had been deemed “unreleasable.” A spokesperson for the studio told TheWrap Friday evening that the speculation is “inaccurate.”

Hill’s side offered a similar correction, framing the situation as unfinished business rather than a dead end. A representative for Hill told TheWrap that the movie is “not finished” yet and that it is currently in post production.

The pushback also challenged the idea that the movie had simply vanished from the calendar. An individual with knowledge of the timeline disputed the narrative around the July 17 date. telling TheWrap that Hill’s film wrapped production in January—leaving Warner Bros. wanting more time in the run-up to release. TheWrap has since learned that a new release date is forthcoming.

“Cut Off” stars Kristen Wiig. along with Nathan Lane and Bette Midler. and tells the story of two rich siblings who are cut off from their parents and forced to learn how to support themselves for the first time. The film also includes Adriana Barraza, Camila Cabello, Langston Kerman, Chelsea Peretti and Cary Christopher.

Ezra Woods penned the screenplay alongside Hill. The comedy marks Hill’s third feature-length fictional film: after the 2018 coming-of-age drama “Mid90s” and the 2026 black comedy “Outcome. ” which he also co-wrote with Woods. He also directed the 2022 documentary “Stutz,” chronicling the life and career of Hill’s psychiatrist, Dr. Phil Stutz.

All of that history is now back under the spotlight as Warner Bros. insists the film isn’t “unreleasable”—and as the only clear certainty remains that “Cut Off” is still being finished, with a new release date still to come.

  1. I swear this is just marketing panic because it was supposed to hit July 17. If it’s not finished yet then why even announce a date? Nolan probably ate their lunch.

  2. Wait “cut off” in the plot is literally the parents cutting them off, but people are saying the studio cut it off too lol. Also they wrapped in January? That’s kinda wild, like how long does post production take for a comedy?

  3. This whole thing feels like the studios just changed their mind. First it’s July 17, then it’s “inaccurate” and “not finished,” and now a new date is “forthcoming” 🙄. Meanwhile everyone keeps talking about that other movie with Matt Damon like that’s the only reason. Maybe it’s because Jonah Hill’s movie has too many rich people names? Idk.
