Wall Street shuts July 3, reopens July 6

For many investors, the question won’t be what happens on the Fourth—it’s what happens the day before. In 2026, Independence Day lands on a Saturday, but Wall Street will still mark the holiday with a full early break.
U.S. stock markets will be closed on Friday, July 3. The Nasdaq and the New York Stock Exchange will stay dark that day and reopen Monday, July 6.
The bond market is getting a shorter runway. The U.S. bond market will be closed on July 3 and will close early at 2 p.m. ET on Thursday, July 2, according to the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association.
The holiday date itself reaches back to July 4, 1776, when the United States unanimously adopted the Declaration of Independence. But the Fourth of July didn’t become a regular. widely observed occurrence until after the War of 1812. when major events—including groundbreaking ceremonies for the Erie Canal and the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad—were scheduled to line up with Fourth of July festivities. according to the Library of Congress.
Congress later gave the day its modern federal status. A law passed by Congress made Independence Day a federal holiday on June 28, 1870.
Once the July 3 shutdown ends, trading on Wall Street continues until early September. The next scheduled stock market closure is Monday, Sept. 7, in observance of Labor Day.
The broader 2026 market calendar keeps that rhythm going with additional holiday shutdowns. Markets will also be closed for Thanksgiving on Thursday, Nov. 26, and for Christmas on Friday, Dec. 25.
In one tight stretch, the timing matters: equities will be closed on July 3 and return on July 6, while bonds will be out on July 3 and will stop early at 2 p.m. ET on July 2—leaving investors to plan around a couple of different clocks.
