Late last year, Marketa Vondrousova says she reached a breaking point. On Monday, the tennis world got the answer that comes when athletes refuse to take an anti-doping test.
The International Tennis Integrity Agency announced that Vondrousova, the 2023 Wimbledon champion, was suspended for four years after refusing an anti-doping test. The decision was reached by an independent tribunal.
Vondrousova’s suspension stems from a test she refused in December. She said she felt targeted and afraid when the testing agent rang her door late at night without properly identifying themselves. In her explanation, she cited “mental stress” and fear, describing the moment as one that added to months of strain.
Her ban is scheduled to expire on June 21, 2030. Vondrousova can appeal the decision to the Switzerland-based Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Before the Monday ruling, Vondrousova had already laid out her reaction in an Instagram post in April. “It is very tough for me to talk about this. but I want to be transparent with you about my mental health. ” she said. “The recent doping control incident happened because I reached a breaking point after months of physical and mental stress.”.
Vondrousova, 26, won Wimbledon in 2023 and reached a career-high ranking of No. 6 that year. Her suspension places her among a growing list of high-profile tennis players caught up in doping-related disputes, following cases involving Jannik Sinner, Iga Swiatek and Simona Halep.
Wimbledon begins next week, adding urgency to the sport’s ongoing tension between enforcement and athletes’ accounts of how and why tests happen—or don’t.

So she refused a test and got 4 years… like the system needed more proof.
If the dude showed up late at night and didn’t identify themselves, I’d be scared too. But then again doping rules are doping rules, so idk.
Wait she’s banned until 2030?? That’s wild. I thought she was only suspended for like a few months when these things happen. Also it says Wimbledon starts next week so they’re just punishing her right before—seems kinda convenient.
I don’t even understand how they can say she refused when she’s claiming the tester was late. Like was the paperwork there or not? Tennis is always drama anyway. If they’re so serious about “mental stress” then maybe they should be more careful about how they knock on doors.
