Trump threatens prison for Reflecting Pool “vandals”

Trump threatens – President Trump has escalated his fight over the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, saying the vandalized damage is being handled “ASAP” while warning of a 10-year prison sentence for destroying the site. His claims—ranging from a 300-foot gash to alleged chemi

For the third straight day, the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool has been treated like a crime scene—except this one is being prosecuted in real time through the president’s posts.

On Monday morning. Donald Trump returned to Truth Social to insist that “vandals” had turned the Reflecting Pool into an algae-infested mess and to promise that federal punishment would follow. “Of the MANY Statues and Fountains that we rebuilt. renovated. cleaned. and fixed. the only one that was Vandalized was the Reflecting Pool. which is being taken care of. ASAP!” Trump wrote.

He went further. tying the alleged damage to the kind of punishment he says should deter anyone thinking of touching the water again. Trump claimed the pool had been “given a 300 foot long gash. ” that “chemicals have been illegally placed in the water. ” and that a newly restored grass field had been destroyed with “a gigantic 86 47 chemically carved into it.” He added a warning meant to land with maximum force: “Please remember that there is a 10 year prison sentence for the destruction. or even the attempted destruction. of such things — Which will be fully enforced.”.

The president has been insisting for days that what’s going wrong with the pool is the result of a left-wing conspiracy meant to humiliate him. On Saturday. Trump wrote that once the pool was refilled. it had “worked perfectly. ” including a “mirror like finish” that he said was “perfectly reflecting the two Great Monuments. which it never had before!” He also blamed the “terrible Vandals. ” writing that what they did was an “affront to both Presidents George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.”.

The Reflecting Pool’s history, however, is not new. The pool had reflected the monuments for decades, according to the account provided here.

While Trump’s language has hardened into a warning about prison time, the physical claims remain extraordinary. Trump has alleged that vandals cut into the lining and poured “corrosive chemicals” into the water. The Reflecting Pool holds approximately 6.5 million gallons of water. and the only individuals seen dumping chemicals into the area where hired workers were supposed to kill off the algae bloom are described here as those tasked with fighting the algae.

His account also runs alongside a broader dispute over whether the renovation itself is the real culprit. The “shoddy. rushed ‘renovation’” is described as having been carried out through an overpriced no-bid contract. and it is also argued that longtime filtration issues—experts had warned—would not be solved by adding a layer of epoxy. The administration’s own choices. this argument says. may have weakened the bond between plastic and concrete when chemicals were applied to the water to kill a massive algae bloom.

Trump’s attention to algae has not stayed on paper. Over the weekend. the National Guard and a mix of local and out-of-state law enforcement agencies were deployed to the Reflecting Pool. with the stated aim of arresting anyone who touched the water. A former Olympic canoeist was arrested and charged with “vandalism” after reportedly touching a strip of the epoxy resin that is sloughing off of the bottom of the pool.

At least five people have been arrested for allegedly vandalizing the Reflecting Pool, according to CBS News.

Yet for all the enforcement, the argument in this reporting is that the administration has not produced actual evidence of a real act of vandalism despite the presence of security cameras and law enforcement regularly stationed around the Lincoln Memorial and the Reflecting Pool.

There is also a credibility problem embedded in Trump’s own timeline and measurements. His posts have described the damage differently—he previously claimed a 250-foot gash and later said it was a 300-foot gash. The scenario he paints—someone wading into the Reflecting Pool. cutting that length into epoxy. and doing so without being seen by anyone—has been described here as improbable.

The alternative explanation offered in this account points not to a lone saboteur but to the way sealant and chemicals were applied. The claim is that the damage could be a result of the application of the sealant itself. or of the administration’s application of chemicals meant to kill the algae bloom that may have weakened the bond between plastic and the concrete.

The push to prosecute “vandals” also echoes a darker pattern from Washington politics. The Trump administration has a history. described here. of leveling bogus charges against a small number of individuals to silence criticism. During the National Guard’s initial takeover of Washington. D.C. in the summer of 2025. the administration attempted to indict several individuals—including a man who threw a hoagie at a guardsman—on charges of felony assault. only for the effort to be scuttled by local grand juries.

In the same spirit, Janine Pirro—described here as a former Fox News host and current U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia—told Fox News over the weekend that prosecutors should go after vandalism broadly. “Anyone who is in a position of vandalizing or attempting to vandalize the Reflecting Pool will face the criminal justice system in D.C. ” Pirro said. “You’ve got to go after every crime. And in the identification of even minor crimes, you create an atmosphere or a climate where people become more respectful.”.

Trump, for his part, has continued to present the pool’s condition as a personal assault. On Sunday. he wrote that “Work will begin immediately on fixing the seriously vandalized Reflecting Pool. ” after saying he inspected it and could only say “WOW. who would do such a thing.” He called the people he blames “SICK. DERANGED PEOPLE!” and wrote. “We will fix it?”.

By Monday morning, the president’s message had sharpened again: this is not just an infrastructure and environmental problem. It is, he says, a criminal one—with jail time on the line.

  1. So he’s posting about statues again… but isn’t this just like normal maintenance? 300 foot gash sounds made up though.

  2. I’m confused, algae-infested mess doesn’t automatically mean “chemicals illegally placed” right? Like could be runoff or something. Also prisons for vandalism like at the national park is wild, but I guess he’s trying to scare people.

  3. Trump always says he rebuilt things and now the Reflecting Pool is “treated like a crime scene”… but he’s the one talking about Truth Social while they’re “handling ASAP.” If someone did put chemicals in the water then sure punish them, but I saw another clip where they said it was just a leak. How do they know it’s vandals and not maintenance? 300 foot long gash sounds like a rumor someone repeated.
