Valve ships first mass Steam Frame VR headsets

On June 10th, the German container ship Posen pulled into Los Angeles after a two-week voyage from Shanghai. The timing is the kind that makes warehouse work feel like a countdown.

Valve watcher Brad Lynch notes it was almost certainly carrying the first mass production shipments of the Steam Frame, Valve’s new gaming headset.

Import records show Valve’s distribution partner Ceva offloaded nearly 32 metric tons of “Virtual Reality Devices” on Valve’s behalf. After subtracting the roughly 3,700 kilogram weight of five 40-foot shipping containers, that points to about 13 tons of actual product.

Valve’s container traffic doesn’t stop there. With the Steam Machine, its stockpile may now have grown to 141 metric tons. That figure lines up with roughly how much “Game Consoles” product has arrived in 12,600kg containers since April 23rd.

There are also signs of continued Steam Deck movement in May. Judging by the gross weights of the containers—14,500kg for the ones with higher weight—it looks like Valve received three shipments of Steam Deck handhelds. Two appear on May 18th and one on May 30th.

The numbers are large. but VR headsets aren’t usually the kind of item that makes headlines just by mass alone. Thirteen tons isn’t actually a lot of VR headsets, after you account for how much each one weighs. Each Steam Frame unit is listed at 654g (roughly 1.44lb), and it includes a pair of wand controllers. Using quick back-of-the-napkin math, the early shipment likely represents fewer than 20,000 units.

The same shipment math also raises a second question: how many Steam Machines are actually in the US, ready to sell. If the 141 metric tons turns into consoles at a higher 2.6kg weight per unit, that could mean fewer than 50,000 units—before factoring in any controllers or cables.

Valve has already confirmed that both the Steam Machine and Steam Frame will launch this summer. It has also signaled that it had to rethink prices because of RAMageddon. Even if the hardware is pricey, these shipment figures suggest Valve may be aiming for a launch that doesn’t linger.
