The White House South Lawn is starting to change shape—fast.
Photos circulating on social media show construction underway at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue ahead of UFC Freedom 250 on June 14. when the most famous address in the United States will double as a fight venue. With the event less than three weeks away. crews have begun work on the temporary arena that will host the fight card. turning an everyday stretch of lawn into a purpose-built stage.
President Donald Trump unveiled renderings of the temporary UFC cage. and said. “It’s never going to happen again.” The promotion. meanwhile. released its planned setup last week. including a centerpiece described as “the claw”—a massive lighting and cover structure built in Europe and shipped to the United States specifically for the occasion.
Dana White has said the goal is to keep the White House visible as the backdrop for every fight.
For fans, the footprint is split. The venue will seat roughly 5,000 people, with a mix of military members and guests invited by the UFC and the White House. No tickets are going on sale. Another 100,000 fans are expected to watch via screens set up at the nearby Ellipse.
Money is the tightrope the event is walking. UFC says UFC and its parent company, TKO Group Holdings, are picking up the tab. On a financial call, TKO president Mark Shapiro acknowledged that the cost is a “moving target” expected to exceed $60 million. The promotion does not expect to turn a profit. but is counting on roughly $30 million in corporate sponsorships to offset expected losses.
Even with that funding plan, the bill for security is where the stakes turn sharply. While the UFC is covering the restoration of the South Lawn after the event. it is not covering the cost for security. which will be significant. Security will be coordinated between the Secret Service and local law enforcement at the tax payers’ expense.
The schedule keeps stacking on top of political symbolism. UFC Freedom 250 falls not just on Flag Day, but also on President Donald Trump’s 80th birthday. Trump and UFC CEO Dana White have long been close friends—White spoke at Trump’s 2020 and 2016 Republican National Convention appearances and served as a prominent campaign surrogate. Trump has also attended several UFC fights with White.
Inside the cage, the fight card is already carrying star power. The event is headlined by Georgian-Spanish lightweight champion Ilia Topuria. who will put his belt on the line against interim champion Justin Gaethje of Safford. Arizona. The co-main event features Alex Pereira of Brazil facing France’s Ciryl Gane for the interim heavyweight title. Sean O’Malley takes on Canada’s Aiemann Zahabi in a bantamweight bout, with weigh-ins set for the Lincoln Memorial.
The choices surrounding the event—an invitation-only audience of about 5,000, no ticket sales, a massive screen setup at the Ellipse, and a security plan that shifts costs to taxpayers—create a clear tension between spectacle and public expense.
For now, construction is moving on schedule, as the White House grounds are prepared for a fight night designed to keep the presidency front and center.

So they’re really putting a UFC cage on the White House lawn?? wild.
I mean… I guess America loves chaos. But if it costs like $60 million+ why not just lower ticket prices or something? Also the “no tickets” part is confusing like how are they deciding who gets in.
Wait, isn’t the White House protected by like permanent laws and stuff? I swear I saw somewhere this was gonna be like a “test” thing and then it got canceled last minute. Maybe it’s only temporary but still seems illegal or at least against common sense. Dana White wants the cage backdrop, sure, but why.
They’re saying it’s for fans but 100,000 watching on screens at the Ellipse sounds like a setup for a crowd control situation, not a “cool event.” And “It’s never going to happen again” is what they always say right before it happens again lol. Also the claw thing built in Europe… so we shipped some big structure over here just to let people fight in front of Trump’s house. idk. Probably fine I guess.
