Tuchel tells Bellingham no XI guarantee in World Cup

Tuchel no – Thomas Tuchel said Jude Bellingham is still fighting for England’s starting XI as he delivered his World Cup message after the 1-0 warm-up win over New Zealand, with Declan Rice named vice-captain behind Harry Kane.

Thomas Tuchel watched Jude Bellingham arrive at the warm-up match and looked impressed—without ever turning that into a promise.

Bellingham was introduced at half-time in England’s 1-0 win over New Zealand on Saturday in the kind of moment that can sway selection. Morgan Rogers had started in the No 10 role behind Harry Kane. but Tuchel brought on Bellingham to change the rhythm. and the Real Madrid midfielder caught the eye. Yet when asked directly about guarantees for the World Cup starting XI. Tuchel was clear: he cannot hand one to anyone—even Bellingham.

“You are not guaranteed a place. ” Tuchel’s stance effectively framed the conversation. even as he praised the competition for roles. “Yes, he is (fighting for a place),” Tuchel said. “He’s one of the starters, he knows that, but there are 14, 15 potential starters. Then there’s a special group and then there is a leadership group. Then there are guys who finish matches for us and get the energy right and have the role of setting the standards and accepting their roles for challenging.”.

Tuchel added that while roles could always shift, his thinking—at least for now—still points to a crowded doorway: “These roles can always change but, in my head, there are 14, 15 proper starters, and Jude is one of them.”

The picture is especially complicated around the No 10 spot. Tuchel admitted that position is one of several he says is “not nailed down” ahead of next Wednesday’s group-stage opener against Croatia. Bellingham’s impact after replacing Rogers at half-time. Tuchel stressed. has been real—but not decisive enough to close the door for others.

Tuchel also addressed captaincy and leadership. Bellingham wore the armband in the second half in Tampa, but Tuchel explained it was because he was the player with the most caps. For the World Cup in North America, Tuchel said the deputy role will belong to Declan Rice.

“I would say Declan is my vice-captain,” Tuchel revealed. “We started with Ollie (Watkins) against Wales (in October) and Declan was captain. That was when I told him (he would be vice-captain).”

Asked whether Bellingham was part of the leadership group, Tuchel stopped short of confirmation. Still. he believes Bellingham has landed in Florida at the right time. describing the 22-year-old as being ready in more than one sense. “I think he is actually. at this moment. in a sweet spot. because he had his break and has the hunger to be back on the pitch. ” Tuchel said. “You can see Jude has the decisiveness, he has the bite, this is a key characteristic. ‘You can see that he comes from an injury and is full of energy. happy to be back on the pitch. He had his break, unfortunately, in a decisive part of the season for Real Madrid. He’s fresh, he wants to play, and he’s in top shape. He looks good in training.”.

For all the focus on selection, the warm-up win also carried a more practical worry heading into the tournament: the state of the pitches. Harry Kane spoke up after Tuchel admitted the surface in Tampa was “uneven” and “did not help” England.

Kane agreed the conditions will be part of the tournament reality rather than an exception. “The pitch wasn’t great,” Kane said. “That’s going to happen in the tournament. We like to play quick and we like to play sharp, and that wasn’t always possible on that pitch. It was a bit sticky and dry. These are experiences we have to cope with.”.

So England head toward the opener against Croatia next Wednesday with two stories running side by side—Bellingham’s impressive arrival and the stubborn fact that Tuchel still sees plenty to play for in the starting XI. with Rice set to carry the vice-captain responsibility behind Kane in North America.
