Mourinho returns as Perez re-election clears Real rebuild

Jose Mourinho’s Real Madrid return is confirmed after Florentino Perez’s re-election, ending a campaign that promised a return and superstar signings. The next steps—payment of Mourinho’s Benfica release clause and a summer rebuild—can now move quickly, with P

Real Madrid’s new era began not with a trophy lift, but with an election result that cleared the path for Jose Mourinho to step back into the club’s spotlight.

Mourinho. 63. has signed a three-year deal to rejoin his former side. but the move was tied to Florentino Perez being re-elected president. That condition has now been met. Perez’s renewal was confirmed on Sunday evening following an acrimonious campaign in which Mourinho vowed to return as head coach. while both candidates repeatedly promised blockbuster additions.

Late on Sunday, Mourinho released a video response to the news: “Yes, Florentino Perez won. Of course.”

Perez. who has served as president for 23 years across two spells—first between 2000 and 2006 and then since 2009—won yet another five-year stay at the club. He had been returned unopposed in the last five elections, and this time polled 65 per cent to secure the result. His challenger, Enrique Riquelme, an energy millionaire from Alicante, lost with 35 per cent after 33,555 members voted.

Before the elections, Perez promised spending and recruitment on a scale meant to excite the club’s 100,000 members. He said he would make an offer of “at least €150m” (£129m) on Tuesday for an unnamed “galactico”. alongside three new signings. The names touted include Nico Paz, Jacobo Ramon and Victor Munoz.

Perez previously laid down his marker: “I’m going to make an offer to a Champions League club soon. on Tuesday. which will be the biggest payment Real Madrid has ever made for a player. at least 150 million.” He insisted it was not Michael Olise. not Jeremy Doku. not Erling Haaland. and not Harry Kane—describing the target as a player he said “plays at a level above midfield” and “is not from the Premier League. ” before calling him “a total Galactico.”.

The election did not pass cleanly. Results were held up after Riquelme challenged the validity of around 1,000 postal votes, with over 400 ultimately struck off. Riquelme had also pushed the campaign toward financial alarm. suggesting the club was in a “serious financial crisis” after overspending and accusing Perez of plotting to privatise Real Madrid.

For Mourinho, the confirmation has immediate consequences. Perez’s reappointment means the formalities surrounding payment to Benfica of Mourinho’s €15m (£13m) release clause—now understood to have nearly doubled due to the delay caused by the election—can be completed. The deal is expected to be wrapped up in the coming hours.

The move also leaves a vacancy at Benfica for someone else to fill. Marco Silva, the Fulham manager, is set to replace Mourinho at the Lisbon club.

Mourinho returns to the Bernabéu 13 years after his departure in 2013. Back then, he won La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup during his three years in charge before moving to Chelsea.

The club’s summer rebuild is already taking shape, even before Mourinho officially returns. It has already seen Ibrahima Konate and Denzel Dumfries sign up. with more arrivals expected in the coming weeks and months. Dani Carvajal and David Alaba are going the other way, while Dani Ceballos is also set to leave.

But Mourinho’s task will not start on the training pitch alone. The Portuguese is arriving at Real with a dressing room that has been increasingly strained through the season. tensions that have flared into public incidents—something that sits directly in his job description as he tries to restore order.

The clearest flashpoint came last month. Federico Valverde, 27, was hospitalised after a fight with Aurelien Tchouameni. Tchouameni is a 26-year-old France international. Valverde denied that the pair “came to blows.” Both players then attended an internal disciplinary meeting and accepted fines of £432. 000 (€500. 000) each.

Mourinho is also expected to focus on an area the team has struggled with throughout the campaign: physical conditioning and medical services. Those issues have been described as sources of friction between Xabi Alonso and the club. The injury numbers underline the scale, with 58 injuries and 20 players sidelined last season.

Perez’s victory has now positioned the club to act quickly—both on personnel and on the wider atmosphere Mourinho will have to manage. Riquelme, though defeated, left the message that the fight isn’t over. Congratulating Perez in the early hours of Monday morning, he said: “For us, this is not the end. It is the beginning. The club members will not go another 20 years without voting.”.

Whether that energy turns into pressure on the board—or fuel for Mourinho’s promised rebuild—will likely be answered in the same place where Madrid always draws its most intense attention: the transfer market, and the dressing room that must hold together long enough to make new signings matter.

  1. Wait I thought Mourinho was fired like last season? Now he’s signing 3 years because of an election?? that’s kinda wild lol. Real Madrid move so messy.

  2. The article says Benfica release clause, but isn’t that like buying a player from Benfica? I’m confused. Also “galactico” sounds like another made up marketing thing, they always promise like €150m and then get someone weird.

  3. Unopposed for the last five elections?? that’s not democracy that’s just Perez riding the same wave again. 65% is crazy though. And those names they’re throwing around (Nico Paz etc) sound like youth players, so I don’t get how this is supposed to be a summer rebuild and super signings. Mourinho better not come back and complain about the board again.
