Iran visa dispute shadows World Cup amid media rules

While the fourth estate’s job is always to provide fair and balanced coverage, when it comes to global sporting events journalists often want to see their national teams enjoy success. After all, the deeper the Socceroos go into the World Cup for example, the longer Australian media will remain in the United States covering the biggest sporting event on the planet. But, ahead of Australia’s final warm up match against Switzerland, media members were reminded of the rules of the press box in the US.

Those rules which included: Despite the pre-warning, two Australian journalists received sideways glances when they turned up wearing a Socceroos shirt for the clash with Switzerland in San Diego – although one reporter made a quick shirt change at half-time after being made aware of his fashion faux pas. USA ACCUSE IRAN OF TRYING TO ‘SNEAK TERRORISTS IN’ Iran’s World Cup squad landed in Mexico on Sunday under the shadow of a bitter diplomatic row, after the United States — in open military conflict with

Tehran — refused to issue visas for some team support staff, accusing them of trying to ‘sneak terrorists in’. Iran coach Amir Ghalenoei complained on arrival at Tijuana airport that “we should have been here last week because a 12-hour time difference needs two weeks of adjusting.” He added: “Usually in these tournaments, before technical matters, ethical and human considerations must be respected — which I think for us it was not the case.” The dispute erupted just days before Thursday’s kickoff of the 2026

World Cup, which is being jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada. Ghalenoei thanked FIFA for its efforts to help secure entry, but said “we are upset about this behaviour. It has certainly never happened before.” On the eve of their departure for Mexico, the players finally received their US visas, Washington’s envoy to Turkey Tom Barrack said on X late Friday. But Iran’s embassy to Turkey said support staff had been denied visas — 15 administrative and management staff are concerned, an

Iranian diplomat and state TV said. The embassy slammed what it called “deliberate and discriminatory treatment against Iran’s national football team” and called for FIFA “to hold the US accountable for violations of its rules.” Adding to the tensions, Iran’s ambassador to Mexico said Saturday the squad had been notified that, under their visa conditions, the team must enter and leave US soil on the same day as their matches. A US administration official did not directly address the matter of those whose visas were

refused, saying only: “We will not allow the Iranian team to abuse this system to sneak terrorists into the United States under false pretences.” YAMAL’S TWO WORLD CUP PROMISES – TalkSport Lamine Yamal has made two promises to his fans ahead of this summer’s World Cup. The 18-year-old is preparing to make his tournament debut for Spain in North America. After winning the Euros two years ago, Yamal is part of Luis de la Fuente’s squad for the World Cup. Yamal’s World Cup promise Ahead

of the tournament, the Barcelona forward took part in a Q&A as part of a video shared to his YouTube channel. To conclude the video, Yamal was asked if he had any promises if Spain win the World Cup. In response, the teenager vowed to grow a full beard and moustache by not shaving for three weeks. He explained: “I promise that if I win the World Cup, I’ll grow a full beard and moustache for (cameraman says ‘one year’)… A whole year?! Three weeks.”

However, that is not all, with Yamal adding that he would also raffle 100 pairs of Beats by Dre headphones. Yamal continued: “I promise that if I win the World Cup, I’ll raffle 100 Beats.” The headphones can retail at up to £350 or more per pair, meaning a World Cup triumph for Spain could now cost Yamal £35,000. It would be his country’s second victory in the tournament after their maiden win back in 2010. Yamal is currently a brand ambassador for Beats, having

recently been spotted wearing an unreleased pair of their headphones. SNUBBED FRENCH STAR IN AMERICA FOR HARVARD COURSE – TalkSport Eduardo Camavinga has gone back to school after missing out on France’s World Cup squad. The Real Madrid midfielder was left out by Didier Deschamps for this summer’s tournament in North America. It marks the first time Camavinga will be absent from a major tournament since Euro 2020. The 23-year-old was part of the France side at both the 2022 World Cup and Euro 2024.

However, he will not feature this time around after being snubbed by Deschamps. Despite the setback, Camavinga has still headed to the USA following the end of the season. Instead of training with the rest of the national team, though, he has attended Harvard Business School. Camavinga has revealed he has completed a short course in the business of entertainment, media and sports. In a post on Instagram, he shared a series of snaps from his time at the university. Alongside them, he wrote: “A

few days of learning, listening and growing. Grateful for the experience at Harvard Business School.” Harvard is located just five miles from France’s World Cup training base in Massachusetts. 1. I don’t really get how visa stuff is connected to the World Cup… like can’t they just play? Also the headline says Iran is trying to sneak terrorists in?? pretty intense.

  2. Wait so the USA denied visas for “support staff” but Iran is mad about a 12-hour time difference…? That sounds like they’re complaining about jet lag not visas lol. I’m probably missing something.

  3. This is why I hate the media rules and the whole “press box” thing. First they’re mad about journalists wearing shirts, now it’s visas and terrorism accusations? feels like FIFA can’t control anything. Next thing you know they’ll be checking everyone’s luggage at the stadium.
