A routine airport trip turned into a security turning point at Honolulu International Airport after an off-duty law enforcement officer noticed suspicious behavior and alerted TSA officers.
In a June 29 news release. the Transportation Security Administration said the officer was traveling personally when they spotted a passenger hiding a knife inside their prosthetic leg. The officer then alerted Lead TSA Officer Raynani Camara, who notified Supervisory Officer Michael Bugarin. Together, the two agents identified the passenger at the security checkpoint and pulled them aside for additional screening.
Bugarin reviewed CCTV footage and found the traveler had “placed an item on his prosthetic leg at the divesture table,” according to the release. TSA said the passenger’s prosthetic leg was then put through the X-ray scanner, which revealed a folding knife in the underside heel of the foot.
Authorities did not identify the passenger. TSA said the traveler was denied entry and escorted out of the checkpoint.
Hawaii TSA Federal Security Director Nanea Vasta called the incident a reminder that vigilance matters beyond routine screening. She said. in the release. “This incident is a powerful reminder that situational awareness is essential at every moment – not just during routine screening. ” adding that the vigilance and swift action of Camara and Bugarin. alongside the use of available tools like CCTV. showed TSA’s commitment to mitigating threats even in “the most hectic environments.”.
The disclosure also comes after another security incident earlier this year: In June, an Indianapolis International Airport passenger was caught trying to hide a live smoke grenade inside a jar of peanut butter in his checked baggage.

How did they even check a prosthetic leg like that? That sounds wild.
I mean… good job catching it, but isn’t TSA already supposed to catch stuff? Off-duty officer noticing behavior feels like random luck.
Wait so the guy had a folding knife in his heel… that’s like movie stuff. I’m not saying TSA is wrong but if authorities didn’t identify the passenger then how do we know it was actually intentional and not just like a medical thing? Also prosthetics getting x-rayed seems like a lot.
This is why I don’t fly anymore. First it’s a smoke grenade in peanut butter and now a knife in a fake leg, like what even is going on. Next they’re gonna find contraband in the carry-on charger or something.
