Trump’s Reflecting Pool Overhaul Crumbles Under Scrutiny

President Donald Trump’s $14 million effort to restore the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool has run into fresh ridicule and controversy, with tourists taking souvenirs off peeling “American flag blue” paint as critics question what they call a mismatch between
On a day when tourists were close enough to scrape off souvenirs, the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool looked less like a serene ribbon between Washington landmarks and more like a hands-on project that lost control.
MS NOW host Chris Hayes framed the green-tinted water as the “most visually arresting metaphor” for President Donald Trump’s era in Washington. pointing to the pool’s change since Trump spent $14 million trying to clean it. Hayes described what visitors are seeing now as a “leaky. peeling. algae-infested mess” that. in his telling. is “getting worse by the day.”.
Trump had pledged to turn the green-hued water into a blue pool reflecting the sky and the DC landmarks it sits between. and he blamed the green color on former President Barack Obama. In the Oval Office. Trump even used visual props. including holding a poster of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool while speaking on Wednesday. June 3. 2026. in Washington.
But the pool’s condition is drawing the opposite kind of attention. Hayes said it is arguably looking worse than it did before. and he pointed to paint installed on the bottom—described as “American flag blue”—that is now peeling off in chunks. Footage shown by Hayes included tourists commenting directly on what they were seeing, and one called it a “national embarrassment.”.
The dispute isn’t only about appearance. Hayes zeroed in on the government’s response, quoting a Department of the Interior statement that insisted the “Reflecting Pool water is crystal clear,” even as Hayes said that claim is contradicted by what people can “see with our own eyes.”
“That, of course, is obviously not true,” Hayes said.
He then widened the lens to how the work was handled. Hayes said he dug into who performed the beautification effort and found what he called “an old-fashioned corruption angle” after two no-bid contracts were awarded. One of those contracts, Hayes said, went to a Trump donor and Mar-a-Lago neighbor named John Cafaro.
Hayes also argued the broader pattern fits how Trump has operated on other projects. He said Trump has been very hands-on with most of the other beautification projects. and he suggested there is no reason to think the Reflecting Pool work was different. Hayes cited Trump’s alleged micromanagement by comparing it to “the destruction of the East Wing for his ballroom and his UFC birthday bash. ” calling this effort—and its outcome—an “expensive and embarrassing mess he is trying desperately to cover up.”.
For now, the Reflecting Pool remains the centerpiece of a growing public argument: whether the official story can keep pace with the sight of peeling paint, algae, and crowds grabbing chunks as souvenirs, and whether the contracts behind the cleanup will stand up to scrutiny as the work continues.

So they spent 14 million and it still looks gross? lol.
I saw the headline about the “American flag blue” and I’m like… okay that’s kinda on brand, but if it’s peeling and green underneath then yeah that sounds like a scam or something. Also why are tourists allowed to scrape it? seems like a mess all around.
Not defending any of it but wasn’t Obama responsible for literally everything back then too? Like they blamed him for the green water so now people act surprised? I can’t even tell what color it is in the video, just looks like water. Maybe it’s supposed to be green? idk
“Crystal clear” my butt. If tourists are taking souvenirs off the paint that’s already proof the gov messed up. And the whole holding a poster thing… come on, this is the Lincoln Memorial, not a campaign stop. Hayes calling it a metaphor or whatever is probably extra, but the pool literally looks like it’s falling apart in real time, so yeah I believe people. Also algae infestation? that’s not normal.
