Trump’s MSG visit triggers TSA-style screening for Game 3
TSA-style screening – With President Donald Trump expected to attend NBA Finals Game 3 on Monday, June 8 at Madison Square Garden, the NYPD and the U.S. Secret Service are putting a tighter security footprint in place hours ahead—complete with a TSA-style magnetometer screening pro
When the sun was still climbing over midtown Manhattan, Madison Square Garden had already started to feel different.
A security wall around the perimeter of the arena—widely shared in multiple videos and photos circulating on social media on Monday morning—appeared in the hours before the Knicks and San Antonio Spurs were set to tip off in NBA Finals Game 3 on Monday, June 8.
The tightening comes after the NBA warned that President Donald Trump’s expected appearance would require extra security measures. Trump has said he plans to attend Game 3, and he was asked about high ticket prices for the NBA Finals, replying, “that’s the way life is, you know?”
The NYPD said that roughly 12 hours before the scheduled start, its security perimeter would run from W 35th Street to W 30th Street between 6th Ave. and 8th Ave. around Madison Square Garden.
For fans arriving in time for the game’s 8:30 p.m. ET tip, the changes are concrete: U.S. Secret Service agent Matt McCool said all fans would face TSA-style magnetometer screening before entering the arena. He urged attendees to arrive at MSG at least two hours early on Monday.
McCool framed the effort as operational and direct. “The Secret Service’s focus is straightforward. ” he said. “to ensure everyone attending the game can enjoy the game and have a safe experience while we carry out our responsibility to protect the President of the United States. To enforce that mission, there will be enhanced law enforcement and security presence in and around Madison Square Garden.”.
What fans can expect at the perimeter is tightly controlled. Starting at 4 p.m. ET. the NYPD said only people with a game ticket. a train ticket going to Penn Station. or proper credentials for another authorized reason would be allowed into the secure area. There are five designated screening areas to enter the security perimeter.
Bags and alcohol won’t make it through. The NYPD said backpacks, bags and alcohol will not be permitted inside the perimeter—aside from travelers going to Penn Station.
Federal security will also be visible inside Madison Square Garden, with drones and anti-drone technology deployed “to protect and reassure fans,” officials said.
McCool also delivered a practical reminder in the middle of the security messaging: “we do not want you to miss tip off” while urging early arrival.
Jewels of the Knicks’ home-celebration culture are being reshaped, too. A planned watch party for Game 3 outside Madison Square Garden has been canceled, New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed. Tisch said the watch party is planned to return for Game 4 on Wednesday.
Inside the arena, the rules are getting sharper. McCool emphasized there will be a “strict no-bag policy” inside Madison Square Garden on Monday.
The NBA Finals atmosphere has already produced a record of crowd-level scrutiny at MSG. Nearly 7,000 fans showed up at Madison Square Garden to watch New York’s 105-104 victory over San Antonio during Game 2, and authorities said 26 people were detained; 17 were arrested and charged.
At the same time, the security posture has a broader recent history behind it. There was an attempted assassination of Trump on April 25 at the White House Correspondents Dinner. The event abruptly ended after a gunman stormed a security checkpoint at the Washington Hilton and opened fire at U.S. Secret Service agents.
Trump has continued to attend major events despite tight procedures. He attended the U.S. Open tennis final in New York in September 2025, and long security lines outside Arthur Ashe Stadium forced event organizers to push back the start of the match by about 30 minutes.
Against that backdrop. the message from MSG leadership and law enforcement has been consistent: protect the president. keep the arena running. and prevent fans without the right access from getting trapped out by the tightened perimeter. “The message is simple,” Tisch said. “Celebrate the Knicks. but avoid the MSG area tonight if you do not have tickets to the game or some other valid reason to be there.”.
As Game 3 approaches, the wall around “the World’s Most Famous Arena” isn’t just a visual sign. It’s a warning that the night’s first real barrier won’t be the tip—it will be the line.
