Trump’s Lincoln Memorial pool turns blue after $14.2m
Before-and-after satellite images captured the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool shifting from algae-green to a darker, newly refreshed surface after President Donald Trump’s $14.2 million renovation project began in 2026. Trump publicly called the water “filth
By March 10, 2026, the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool looked anything but ceremonial.
A satellite image showed the water turned green. its surface clouded by widespread algae—an image that would soon sit at the center of a very public promise. Just weeks earlier. in April. President Donald Trump said he had chosen Atlantic Industrial Coatings to renovate the pool ahead of America’s 250th anniversary. framing the work as a correction to what he described as “filthy” water that was “not representative of the country.”.
The scale was clear from the numbers. Trump’s $14.2 million project included sealing and painting the bottom of the 2,030-foot-long pool an “American flag blue,” a change intended to make the reflecting pool better mirror the Washington Monument.
Cost estimates had moved once before the renovation began. Trump initially estimated the work would cost between $1.5 million and $2 million, a figure he later left behind as the larger $14.2 million effort took shape.
There was also an earlier controversy around the contractor. Trump first said Atlantic Industrial Coatings worked on his Virginia golf club, then later walked back that claim.
On June 7. one day after Trump said the project was completed. another satellite photo showed a darker surface where the green algae had dominated weeks earlier. The shift wasn’t just dramatic—it was visible. By June 9, a site photo showed the reflection of the Washington Monument had returned on the water.
Trump made the political case for the change on June 6, posting to Truth Social to celebrate the refreshed reflecting pool. In his message. he said: “It was originally opened in 1922. but never functioned properly — now it does!” He added: “Thank you President Trump. thank you Department of the Interior — AND THE BEST IS YET TO COME with The Trump Promenade at The Lincoln Memorial. and The Triumphal Arch. which will be. along with the White House Ballroom. when completed. the Greatest Structure in Washington.”.
