Payton signs new five-year deal, eyes longevity
Sean Payton, 62, has agreed to a new five-year contract with the Broncos, and he signaled Thursday that he plans to keep coaching as long as he enjoys it—without focusing on any end-game timeline.
On Thursday, Sean Payton laughed when reporters asked how much longer he plans to coach. The Broncos coach’s answer was simple: “Well, five years.”
Payton, 62, pointed to the partnership at the top as the reason he feels comfortable looking ahead. “I think most importantly, aligning with [G.M.] George [Paton] and the working relationship,” he said. “We enjoy coming to work together and going through this together. I think we think a lot alike.”
He then went back to how the conversation has evolved. Asked about his longevity a year ago in Vegas—just before Bo Nix asked him the same question—Payton said he told everyone it felt wide open. “You guys heard that story a year ago in Vegas. the week prior Bo [Nix] asked me. ‘How long?’ And I was like. ‘Shoot. Plenty of time. Eight years, nine years. Whatever.’ Then we had one of those gameday moments and I said, ‘Well right now it feels like one year.’”.
This time, Payton said the focus still isn’t on a distant finish line. “Fair question, but I haven’t really given any thought to the end game. I think I have a lot of juice left and enjoy what we’re doing. Someone asked the other day. ‘Do you enjoy it?’ I think when that stops is when you have to look at it. I’m not at that spot right now.”.
Payton first became an NFL head coach in 2006, and his résumé gives the extension extra gravity. With his new deal. he has a chance to become the first coach to win a Super Bowl with two different teams. Others in the league who also have a path to that distinction include Steelers coach Mike McCarthy and Giants coach John Harbaugh.

Okay so he’s just gonna keep talking about “juice” till it’s too late lol.
I don’t even get it, he said last year it felt “wide open” and then suddenly it’s “one year”?? Sounds like the team is falling apart.
“Five years” is what they wanted him to say. Also he’s 62 so I’m just waiting for the inevitable health scare, idk. Broncos gonna be fine though with him and Paton working together.
So he wants to win a Super Bowl with two different teams… like Mike McCarthy and John Harbaugh too. But didn’t he already lose a bunch of stuff in the playoffs? I’m confused. And Bo Nix being involved in the “how long” question is kind of weird to me.
