Trump expected to break FIFA protocol at World Cup final

Trump expected – President Donald Trump is reportedly being given a rare choice for the World Cup trophy ceremony: stay with the team during the trophy lift or stand with executives and dignitaries. The decision is set against a backdrop of FIFA protocol—and a relationship wit

On a night when the world is watching players lift the World Cup trophy, President Donald Trump may be the one stepping slightly out of the script.

A British report says Trump has been offered the chance to break tradition at the World Cup final—an option that would keep him close to the moment of the trophy presentation rather than positioned with other officials.

The account. carried by talkSPORT under the headline “Donald Trump expected to break major FIFA protocol in potentially awkward World Cup moment. ” frames it as the kind of choice that looks small on paper but can land loudly in public view. It’s also the kind of spectacle that would inevitably sharpen what spectators and political observers already expect from Trump: he treats ceremonies as stages. and he rarely passes up the chance to be seen.

Tradition matters here because it usually keeps the spotlight on the players. The report notes that while it’s not uncommon for the leader of a World Cup host country to participate in the trophy ceremony, hosts typically let the footballers handle the trophy lift themselves.

Where the decision gets specific is timing and positioning. The report says FIFA is letting Trump choose whether he will remain with the team during the trophy lift or be stationed with other executives and dignitaries. “White House insiders” are described as saying Trump will choose the former.

That would mirror an earlier moment: the report says Trump made the same choice during the FIFA Club World Cup last summer.

The context surrounding all of this is already well-known in FIFA circles. Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino have developed a “chummy” relationship, and the report points to December, when Infantino presented Trump with a consolation peace prize after Trump did not win the Nobel Peace Prize.

The World Cup final is scheduled for July 19 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

HuffPost has reached out to The White House and FIFA for comment, underscoring that while the question here is ceremonial, it’s also political: whether the president blends into the tradition—or decides, in the most highly visible moment of the tournament, to take the lead position.

  1. Wait so FIFA is letting him choose to be by the trophy or by the executives? That feels like it’s gonna be a whole thing for no reason. I just want the players lifting it, not whoever’s doing politics.

  2. Is this like the Nobel Peace Prize thing? Because I saw something about Gianni Infantino giving him some “peace prize” and now it’s the World Cup trophy… so like is Trump paying FIFA or something? Kinda confusing honestly.

  3. “Break protocol” is such a dramatic way to say stand in the right spot. But knowing Trump he’ll probably be right next to the team for the lift and then act like he did it. Also MetLife Stadium… that’s where stuff gets rowdy anyway so it’ll be chaos on TV.
