Wednesday evening at the Mounted Unit barn in Acton looked routine—horse patrol gear, a familiar facility, and the kind of public-facing presence visitors often rely on. Then a gun discharged by accident, and the trooper’s day changed fast.
Massachusetts State Police said a state trooper was injured after his weapon accidentally discharged at the Mounted Unit barn on Wednesday evening. First responders transported him to Lahey Hospital in Burlington. Police said his injuries were not life-threatening.
The trooper was released from the hospital overnight and is recovering at home, officials added. Under department policy, he will be out on administrative leave. The matter remains under investigation.
The Mounted Unit’s work is built around visibility and safety: patrols on horseback at state parks, beaches, and reservations, with a mission of providing safe and family-friendly environments for visitors.

How does a gun just “accidentally discharge” at a barn like… come on.
Glad he’s okay I guess. But if it was at the barn wouldn’t they make sure everything was unloaded or locked up?
Administrative leave always sounds like “we’ll figure it out later.” Did the horse spook him or was it like a weird cleaning accident? Either way Lahey is pretty far for a small mishap.
Mounted unit at Acton… that’s the one with the families and kids watching, right? It’s just wild to me like I thought cops had some kind of trigger lock or whatever. Hope he recovers but they should fire him honestly, accidents don’t happen for no reason.
