The last place anyone expects a music career to land is behind bars—especially when the case involves fentanyl.
Rick James’ son, Tazman Johnson, is currently locked up in the Los Angeles County Jail facing serious drug charges involving fentanyl. Jail records obtained show Johnson was arrested April 29 on a felony warrant, along with a no bail warrant.
Those records also point back to March 2024, when he was initially arrested for possession of fentanyl. At that time, court documents say he was charged with misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance and misdemeanor drug paraphernalia. He was released from custody on bond.
A couple weeks later, a judge issued a bench warrant for $10K after Johnson failed to appear in court. He wasn’t arrested on that bench warrant until April, and last month he pleaded not guilty to both charges.
The case doesn’t stop at the drug allegations. Johnson is also facing a burglary charge stemming from a 2019 arrest.
For now, people close to Johnson say he is in a program while in jail and concentrating on his music career.
Johnson’s situation carries the weight of his father’s history. Rick James had three kids with two different women, and Johnson’s mother is Tanya Hijazi. Rick James famously struggled with drug addiction for years before his August 2004 death. He died from pulmonary failure and cardiac failure. and he had cocaine and methamphetamine in his system when he died at 56.
