JD Vance waits on baby name; no White House babysitter

The Vice President’s family plans are heading toward a July arrival—yet even inside the White House, one decision still isn’t made.

Vice President JD Vance, 41, told a telephone interview that he and his wife, Usha Vance, have not picked a name for their fourth child, a baby boy due in July. He said the couple’s newborn will be the first born to a sitting vice president in modern American history.

Vance and Usha Vance, 40, already have three young children: Ewan, 9; Vivek, 6; and Mirabel, 4.

“We have not decided on the name yet,” Vance said. He described how the family handles naming—using the delivery room and the baby’s arrival as the moment things finally click.

“Usha and I have very different perspectives on what to name kids. and so we’re always kind of debating names as we go into the delivery room and then once we see the baby. that’s usually when we decide. ” Vance said. “So no baby name yet. We know it’s a boy. that’s all we know. and I’m sure we’ll name the child by the time we have to put a name on a birth certificate. just like we always do.”.

The naming delay is familiar to the couple, Vance said. He told the outlet that he and Usha chose the names of all three older children “very late,” and did not settle on names for two of the three until after they were born.

That uncertainty is playing out at the same time Vance is tied to a new release: his book, “Communion,” comes out June 16. The excerpt from the memoir has already appeared in the Wall Street Journal.

In “Communion,” Vance suggested that his wife changed her mind about having more children after the death of their friend, Charlie Kirk, following Kirk’s assassination last September.

“For years I had asked Usha to have another baby. and for years she had told me she was done – especially now that public service had elevated us into the national spotlight. ” he wrote. “But something changed for Usha. and not long after we buried my friend. she became pregnant with our fourth child. a boy.”.

The couple announced in January of this year that they were expecting a fourth child.

Last summer, Usha Vance told conservative podcast host Meghan McCain that she did not want to have additional children but did not rule out a fourth one. “Never say never,” she said at the time.

As the White House calendar turns toward summer, Vance also described the everyday logistics of juggling public duties with a growing family—particularly when he brings their children to work.

In an interview with NBC News, Vance said he would bring his older children with him while his wife takes time out of the public eye to bond with their newborn. He said the children enjoy visiting the White House because they get to eat junk food and watch television.

Asked about the arrangement, Vance said no one in the Cabinet had offered to babysit.

“Nobody’s offered [to] babysit, but it’s funny, nobody minds when the kids [are] around, either,” he said.

He added that a few weeks earlier, when his wife wasn’t feeling well, he brought one of the children with him to work. “Everybody’s very welcoming,” he said.

Then he framed the arrangement with the kind of joke that comes from lived familiarity with political power—while also hinting at how unusual the day-to-day can feel.

“Obviously when you’re the vice president, the only person who can really get mad at you is the president,” Vance said. “And so we’ll definitely use that privilege quite a bit over the summer, when we can bring the kids into the White House with me.”

Between the delay over a baby’s name and the lack of help offered to watch older children, the story is less about grand policy and more about small, human decisions—made in the glare of national attention.

For now, the future remains concrete on one point and open on another: Vance and Usha know they are expecting a boy due in July, but the name will wait—until the moment they decide they’re ready.
