Tim Howard backs Chris Richards to lead 2026 run

Tim Howard says defender Chris Richards has grown into a vocal leadership role for the U.S. men’s national team, pointing to his steady Premier League presence and his standout comments with the national team. Howard also weighed in on the team’s goalkeeper co
Tim Howard didn’t hedge when asked who on the current U.S. men’s national team can set the tone for a World Cup run on home soil.
On this week’s episode of “Sports Seriously: Soccer Show,” the USMNT legend said he believes defender Chris Richards is built to be that kind of leader—someone who not only performs, but speaks with authority as the games matter.
“I believe so much in Chris Richards. I think he’s an absolute monster,” Howard said. “He’s grown into a leadership role. I’ve mentioned how hard it is still to be an American in the Premier League, and it’s very special when you can keep your place week-in, week-out as he does at Crystal Palace.”
Howard framed the case in two parts: Richards’ durability in England and the way he’s shown up in the national team conversation. The former goalkeeper didn’t point to one moment alone; he described Richards as a player who has been standing out in the background—and then stepping forward when leadership is needed.
“He’s said a few things in the press over the last year with the national team where he’s really stood out to me as a leader,” Howard said.
As the USMNT prepares for a World Cup in 2026, the leadership questions have sharpened. Multiple veteran or established figures on the current roster have worn the armband. including Tyler Adams. midfielder Christian Pulisic. and veteran defender Tim Ream. Adams has been a consistent presence in matches and locker-room moments. including a reputation for having something to say to teammates when performance drifts.
Howard still made Richards the centerpiece of his answer.
He also addressed a different kind of uncertainty facing the U.S. squad: the “open” goalkeeper competition. Howard discussed what it’s like to criticize the current team as an analyst, even as a former player still connected to the group.
The episode also explored Howard’s own memories from past World Cups, with Howard sharing his favorite recollection as he watched the next generation build toward the tournament.
For Richards, leadership talk is happening alongside a very practical, physical storyline. His fitness has been a topic of concern after he suffered an ankle injury that risked him missing the UEFA Conference League final. He ultimately was fit to make the bench. and he will now travel to Atlanta to join the United States’ training camp ahead of friendly matches with Senegal and Germany.
The thread running through Howard’s comments is clear even when the subject changes—from armband debates to goalkeeping uncertainty to the pressure of returning after injury. Richards. Howard argues. is the one who has both the experience of a demanding league and the presence to influence how the team talks. especially when a home tournament turns every decision into a test.
