For the second time this homestand, a lead slipped away in the bullpen—only this one didn’t stop at one mistake.
On Sunday, the Detroit Tigers failed to split their four-game weekend series against the Houston Astros. They took a 3-0 lead heading into the seventh, but lost 7-5 in 10 innings. Jack Flaherty held the line early with five frames of shutout ball and a whopping nine strikeouts. The late hold, though, belonged to someone else: Tyler Holton, Kyle Finnegan, and Kenley Jansen couldn’t finish the job.
Now the homestand is over—ten games done—and the Motor City Kitties are heading out on a road stretch of six matchups. It begins in the Bronx on Monday against the New York Yankees.
Right-hander Casey Mize will open things up on the mound. Since returning from the injured list, Mize has struggled in his two games. Over his last two starts, he has posted a 6.10 ERA and a 4.46 FIP. In his most recent outing against the Yankees at Comerica Park. he surrendered four runs on eight hits. including a home run. along with a walk. He struck out six in 5 2/3 frames. That start left him with two more losses and pushed his skid to four defeats over his last four decisions.
The matchup brings Detroit a different kind of challenge: left-hander Ryan Weathers. who has been trending upward over his last two starts. Over 12 1/3 innings, Weathers has a 1.46 ERA and 2.62 FIP, including a pair of quality starts. The last time he faced the Tigers. the 26-year-old allowed two runs—one earned—on six hits. with two walks and six strikeouts across six innings. That performance was also his fifth win of the 2026 campaign.
Detroit will try to reset quickly, with the series opener scheduled for Monday night at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx.
