Thomas Tuchel warns England about ‘senseless’ defending

Tuchel warns – Thomas Tuchel told England that ‘senseless’ defending will cost them at the World Cup if they repeat the mistakes that appeared in their first half against Croatia, even after their 4-2 win. Ahead of Tuesday’s clash with Ghana in Boston, Tuchel said the second

England’s World Cup campaign suddenly has two faces: the side that roared in the second half to beat Croatia 4-2, and the one Thomas Tuchel insists must stop repeating its own careless habits.

After that opener. Tuchel made it clear to the Three Lions that “senseless” defending would be punished if it shows up again—especially when games tighten and every mistake gets punished. England now face Ghana in Boston on Tuesday. with a win likely to seal their progress into the knockout rounds and. almost certainly. do so as group winners.

Tuchel is not letting the Croatia result wash away the details. He wants the first-half frailties to stick.

“We need to do things better,” Tuchel said. He pointed to the way England set up for parts of the match. including the “back-seven formation” he described as “just not us.” He also singled out the pattern that worried him most: after ball wins. England produced “too many easy ball losses. ” giving the initiative back immediately.

In Tuchel’s view, even the concession of goals in the first half served a useful purpose. “Maybe it is good that we conceded,” he said, because it tells them, “Let’s not do this again”.

There is also work to be done on how England play when they do accelerate. Tuchel spoke about the need to move the game into the gaps with more purpose and to make quicker use of space once the tempo rises. “When we do accelerate the game. how do we give the man on the ball more options in the gaps and show a bit more confidence?” he said. He stressed that these are improvements the team knows are required.

Alongside the football messages, Tuchel also addressed the hydration breaks that are becoming part of the tournament’s rhythm. On Monday night, he broke down why this World Cup may feel different to the teams that rely on momentum.

“I think it interrupts and changes the identity of a football match much more than I thought,” Tuchel said. He contrasted the new approach with earlier heat breaks. saying that before they were shorter and limited to “a few matches. ” but now they are effectively “in every game.” In his eyes. it “breaks the match almost into four quarters.”.

Tuchel also said rain is possible for Tuesday, but the hydration break will still come. He plans to use it as a coaching moment—“to reinforce, encourage, or even change”—and described the value of having a brief window where he can reach everyone and make small shifts to the whole team.

What England take into the Ghana game is not just a warning. Tuchel is keen to build on what did work against Croatia, particularly the second-half attacking intent. He also pointed to one of his biggest managerial successes over the past stretch: the integration of Jude Bellingham into the team.

Bellingham scored against Croatia and, according to Tuchel, is expected to continue with an unchanged XI—subject to late fitness checks. Tuchel praised the way the Real Madrid star has bought into the tournament’s demands.

“I saw the full potential of Jude and the full commitment,” Tuchel said. “There is no doubt that a competition like this brings out the best in him.”

He then mapped how the connections need to deepen. For Tuchel. improvement is required in the links between Bellingham and Harry Kane. between Bellingham and Declan Rice. and between Bellingham and Elliot Anderson. Tuchel said Bellingham “played fully into our idea. ” showing commitment “to play in full cohesion with everyone else. ” calling him “very important” and “super reliable.”.

Tuchel’s team talk has plenty of voices beyond his own, too. He will encourage assistant Anthony Barry to keep delivering blunt half-time assessments—something Barry did during England’s Croatia game when he spoke to ITV in Dallas.

Tuchel reacted with clear delight at the idea of Barry’s honesty continuing. “Everyone is speaking about this!. I’m so happy if he does that at half-time. and then I don’t have to do it!” Tuchel said. He described Barry as “a top coach. ” adding that he is an “inspiration” who “pushes me. helps me and supports me.”.

Tuchel said the attention around the interview is normal. and suggested Barry’s comments came from genuine knowledge rather than performance for the cameras. “I can imagine it makes sense what he said. ” he said. “and he spoke hopefully from his heart and from his knowledge. because he’s just a top coach.”.

The message from Tuchel is plain heading into Boston: England can celebrate the 4-2 win. but the match still left him with an unfinished business list. Against Ghana. the priority is to stop conceding control after winning the ball. to avoid the “back-seven” shape he believes isn’t their natural strength. and to make sure their defending doesn’t look anything like “senseless” again—because at this tournament. that’s exactly the kind of mistake that becomes expensive.

  1. England won 4-2 and they’re still mad about the first half? Ghana about to get cooked or something lol. I don’t even understand the “back-seven” thing.

  2. Tuchel sounds like he’s blaming the defense but also saying conceding goals was good?? Like what. If they conceded “on purpose” then why is it a problem again. I’m telling you Ghana’s gonna exploit that easy ball loss thing.

  3. The headline says senseless defending and I’m just gonna assume England forgot how to play for 45 minutes. Croatia 4-2 sounds good but then they let things happen anyway. Now it’s Boston vs Ghana and everyone’s talking “accelerate into gaps” like that’s gonna magically fix it. If they screw up again they’re done, but if they win they’re group winners? Idk, sounds like coach talk to me.
