Nancy Mace roasted after ‘trans mice’ backlash

Rep. Nancy Mace faced swift mockery after posting about a “TRANS MICE Act” on X, claiming “NO TRANS MICE” and condemning federally funded “transgender-related experiments on animals.” A community note corrected her wording, explaining “trans mice” refers to tr

Rep. Nancy Mace didn’t just float a new bill idea—she ignited a language-fueled firestorm.

On X. the South Carolina congresswoman posted an image of a mouse touching a human hand with the blunt message. “NO TRANS MICE.” Alongside it. she wrote. “Animals should not be used for radical transgender experiments. ” adding. “This is not science. This is ideological cruelty paid for by the American taxpayers.” She then promoted her proposed legislation. the “TRANS MICE Act. ” writing. “Our TRANS MICE Act ends it. No federal funds may be used to conduct, support or fund research aimed at altering an animal’s biological s**. No hormones. No surgeries. No taxpayer dollars spent mutilating animals in the name of transgender ideology.”.

The post drew hundreds of comments quickly. But the internet’s attention didn’t stay on her proposal for long—it pivoted to the phrase “trans mice.” A community note appeared. making the point that critics said Mace missed: “trans mice” are not transgender animals. They are transgenic mice used in scientific research.

The note explained that “’Trans mice’ refers to transgenic mice, not transgender mice.” It further defined transgenic mice as “mice that have incorporated foreign DNA into their genome, allowing for the study of gene function and disease mechanisms, particularly in cancer research.”

Mace doubled down anyway. Instead of backing away from the controversy, she insisted her post was being misread. “This post is not about transgenic mice. It is about federally funded transgender-related experiments on animals,” she wrote. She also reintroduced the naming of her bill. saying. “The bill is called the Transgender Research on Animals Now Stops and Money for Ideological Cruelty Eliminated Act. also known as the TRANS MICE Act.” She added that the community note was addressing “a completely different topic. ” though many online observers remained unconvinced.

That skepticism spread fast.

Journalist Molly Jong-Fast weighed in with a straight explanation of what transgenic mice are. writing. “Transgenic mice are laboratory animals that have had foreign DNA. such as a human gene or a specific genetic marker. artificially inserted into their genome. They are used for scientific testing.”.

Other commenters leaned into mockery. One user wrote. “As someone who works with transgenic mouse models for cancer research. this is objectively one of the funniest things I’ve seen a real-life politician post.” Another called her out bluntly: “The dumbest member of Congress. which is really saying something.”.

A third commenter pushed the technical point further, saying, “It’s depressingly funny that these people don’t understand the word transgenic. Transgenic research is how we now have mass-produced insulin. Nobody is making trans’gender’ mice.”

Some went for wordplay lessons. One commenter wrote, “Translation: Not transgender. Transmission: Not transgender. Transportation: Not transgender. Transatlantic: Not transgender. Transgenic: Also not transgender. English is hard.”

Not all reactions stayed clinical. Personal insults also circulated. “It’s almost comical how f****** stupid you are,” one X user wrote, with another commenter echoing the sentiment and calling the congresswoman a “f****** idiot.”

Another commenter framed the dispute as a broader issue of accountability. writing: “I wish we lived in an America where there were repercussions for politicians of any affiliation who openly lie to instigate rage against their political rivals. Democrats, Republicans, I don’t really care. If you have to resort to making up [stuff] to get support then you don’t deserve to be paid by anyone’s tax dollars.” The user added. “This is not about transgender mice. And you are either lying to make people mad which makes you a bad person. Or you’re too dumb to know the difference and you should have no influence on our legislation due to ineptitude. ” before concluding.

For Mace. the debate now sits at an unusual crossroads: a proposed law aimed at federally funded research—colliding with a public correction about a single phrase. And online. where “trans” can be read two ways in ordinary speech. the distinction between “transgenic” and “transgender” has become the battleground.

  1. Nancy Mace is just saying what people feel. Like why are taxpayers funding anything “trans related” with animals? Even if the wording got corrected, the intent sounds bad.

  2. I saw this on X and I still don’t get it. Community notes saying trans mice = transgenic mice, but she was like “not about transgenic.” So… is transgenic like, still transgender? Sounds like semantics to me. Either way she’s making a big deal out of it.

  3. These politicians always pick the worst phrasing then act confused when people clown them. But also the animal experimentation part makes me side-eye everything. So does the bill stop hormones and surgeries or does it just stop the word “trans”??
