It’s easy to get fixated on Siri’s big AI overhaul. announced earlier this month at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference. But if you’re trying to picture what iPhone AI will actually feel like day to day. iOS 27 is starting to look less like a single moment—and more like a slow. practical upgrade threaded through the apps you already use.
Apple’s approach is straightforward: instead of asking people to adopt an AI-powered version of Siri to get the benefits. the company is embedding AI into core iPhone features. The goal is to solve real. everyday problems—like splitting a restaurant bill with friends. updating passwords after breaches. reducing repetitive Home notifications. and turning natural language into Calendar events—without turning the experience into a constant chat with a bot.
These smaller features are live now in the developer beta, with plans to reach the public beta next and then roll out as part of iOS 27’s general public release later this fall.
The bill-splitting feature is the kind of tool you only notice when you need it. When iOS 27 arrives later this fall, customers will be able to split a restaurant bill using Apple Cash. The process starts with a photo: you take a photo of the receipt or upload one. and then a new option appears to split the bill with others. Apple Intelligence extracts key details from the receipt—items ordered and quantities, the tip, and the total.
You can choose the items you ordered from the receipt and share a request for others to do the same by messaging the group chat. Others select their items and quantities, with the option to pick a half (1/2) when they split with another. To pay, you double-click just like you would for any other Apple Cash transaction. Apple also handles the tax and tip by requesting everyone’s share alongside the item prices. The feature is designed to work inside familiar apps and services, including Messages and Apple Cash.
Security doesn’t usually feel like a new feature—until it’s the thing that saves you time after something goes wrong. Apple’s password update feature is built around a reality shaped by years of data breaches: even strong. complicated passwords can still end up in bad actors’ hands. With iOS 27, Apple says it will leverage AI to take action on a user’s behalf.
Instead of forcing manual updates, the feature identifies weak and compromised passwords—those found in a data breach, for example—and then securely navigates websites, signing in and upgrading passwords to newer, more secure versions.
In Messages, the AI changes how help appears while you’re already talking. Using Apple Intelligence, Messages will offer one-tap suggestions based on what you and your friends are discussing. If a friend texts to ask you to bring something when you meet up. the suggestion can ask whether you want to add the request to your reminders. If someone asks you to share photos from an event. Apple Intelligence can suggest which photos to send using its understanding of keywords. locations. and the people in your Photos Library. If you’re planning a dinner date or work meeting. Messages can prompt you to add the event to your Calendar.
The feature is meant to feel like part of the conversation rather than a new AI mode—suggestions show up with the context, then you tap and move on.
Apple is also trying to make stressful calls feel more manageable. The “Call Context” feature coming in iOS 27 will surface information you may need when you talk to customer service. If you’re calling about an airline reservation. for instance. the feature will display your confirmation code directly on the call screen.
It works by leveraging Apple Intelligence to pull the information from your email in Mail. and the company says it runs entirely on the device for privacy. Just as importantly. it’s positioned as background help: you don’t have to speak to an AI assistant to extract the details. because the information appears when you need it.
Calendar changes follow the same philosophy—less form-filling, more natural language. Apple will allow you to add or change Calendar events by describing them in natural language. Under the hood. Apple Intelligence extracts contacts and locations and creates a title for the event on your behalf. making it easier to add to Apple Calendar without having to think about which field needs what input.
For people who rely on Shortcuts. iOS 27 aims to remove some of the barrier that keeps non-power users from building automations. The update called “Vibe coding Shortcuts” lets users describe what they want their iPhone to do. rather than building everything through technical steps. Apple suggests examples like configuring your alarm every night based on events on your calendar the next day. or setting up favorite productivity apps to open in a certain way every time you connect your Magic Keyboard to an iPad.
But the examples also stay close to everyday life: Shortcuts can automatically text your partner with your ETA when you leave work, or turn on porch lights when your DoorDash order is arriving.
Even the Home app is getting a quieter AI upgrade. Smart home users are familiar with notifications that feel like spam—multiple alerts for what is essentially one activity. Apple says Home in iOS 27 can use Apple Intelligence to make sense of connected actions so you receive a single notification related to the overall event.
One example: when your partner comes home. raises the smart garage door. checks the mail. and then enters the house. you could get one notification stating that someone arrived at home and closed the garage door. Apple also says the AI can help you find clips you need. such as a package delivery or other event. via search. and that the Home app will feature noteworthy clips for review at the top of the screen.
Safari gets a tab organizer that’s meant to reduce the clutter of research sessions. In iOS 27, Apple Intelligence can understand what you’re browsing across websites and organize tabs into relevant topics. If you have multiple tabs open related to a trip you’re planning. Safari could add them to a tab group for travel. These groups appear at the top of the browser, above the webpage, so you can return to your research later.
Apple says the AI respects privacy for this as well, noting that it doesn’t expose your browsing data to anyone—even Apple.
Taken together, these features don’t just promise intelligence—they try to change where it shows up. Instead of asking users to switch habits to chase AI. Apple is pushing AI into the moments people already rely on: paying. protecting accounts. sending messages. scheduling plans. automating the small stuff. and untangling the chaos of tabs and notifications.
