When Terrion Arnold reported missing cash and goods from his Florida rental, he expected police to focus on a theft. Hours later, a state attorney’s office says the situation escalated into kidnapping and robbery.

Arnold, a cornerback for the Detroit Lions, was arrested on Wednesday, June 24. Florida police plan to charge him with multiple felony counts following his arrest. which came hours after two other defendants agreed to plea deals in the kidnapping and assault case prosecutors say they committed on Arnold’s behalf. Arnold previously denied any involvement in the case.

The state attorney’s office said the charges stem from an alleged orchestration of “the kidnapping and robbery just hours after reporting the missing items to the Largo Police Department.” The charges carry a potential sentence of up to life in prison.

The office intends to file a pretrial motion to keep Arnold in jail until trial, arguing “he remains a danger to the community.” A date for that hearing has not been set.

The Lions, for their part, issued a brief statement after Arnold’s legal situation became public: “We are aware of the legal situation regarding Terrion Arnold. We will not comment at this time out of respect for the ongoing legal process.”

In the allegations now surrounding Arnold, Boakai Hilton plays a central role. Arnold described Hilton as “my childhood best friend” in a police video obtained in April. Hilton is accused of orchestrating the robbery and beating of Arnold’s personal driver and two of the driver’s associates after Arnold accused the driver of arranging the theft of more than $250. 000 in cash and goods from an Airbnb he was renting in February.

Prosecutors say the money and property at the heart of the dispute included an estimated $100. 000 in cash. plus watches. jewelry. designer bags and shoes. and a cell phone. Records obtained from the Largo (Florida) Police Department investigating the robbery of Arnold’s missing cash and goods say Arnold discovered the items stolen when he went to leave his rental unit the morning of Feb. 1.

Arnold reported the theft two days later, on the night of Feb. 3. Then. prosecutors say Del Valle and Randazzo lured the driver and two of his friends to an apartment shortly after midnight Feb. 4. where the men were pistol-whipped. held at gunpoint. and interrogated about their role in Arnold’s missing property by others in the group.

A follow-up interview with Largo police came in the days after the beatings. Arnold referenced that he heard of “something that had ended up happening with [the driver and his friends] and some girls or something like that.” He told police he was in San Francisco for the Super Bowl at the time of the incident.

But body cam footage shows Arnold’s second interview with police to report the incident ended at 11:20 p.m. on Feb. 3, and his name was mentioned multiple times in text messages Del Valle and Randazzo allegedly sent while coordinating the revenge beating.

Hilton, Hughes and a third man not linked to the revenge crime also reported that goods worth more than $10,000 total, including two handguns, were stolen from the rental unit.

Arnold’s legal troubles are occurring alongside a growing list of defendants tied to the same allegations. Hilton is charged with three counts of felony robbery, three counts of felony kidnapping, and one felony count each of conspiracy to commit robbery and conspiracy to commit kidnapping.

Three other defendants—Lyndell Hudson, Christion Williams and Freddie Hughes—also face life sentences on similar charges. Two defendants in the case—Arianna Del Valle and Jasmine Randazzo—agreed to plea deals in court on Wednesday.

Randazzo was sentenced to four years in Florida State prison, followed by six years of probation. She also agreed to testify truthfully for the state in any future proceedings related to this case. Del Valle took an open plea and agreed to testify truthfully for the state. but will be sentenced after other proceedings in the case are done.

Hilton, Hudson, Williams and Hughes are being held without bond in a Florida jail, awaiting trials scheduled for later this year.

While the case has moved through Florida courts, it has also hovered over Arnold’s NFL future. Earlier this spring, the Lions stood behind him as the situation developed. In March. Lions coach Dan Campbell said. “it seems like he wasn’t involved with this.” Campbell added on March 30. “Until something happens. I feel like we’re going to be good here. I’m going to trust what the kid said and we’re all right.”.

Arnold practiced sparingly with the Lions this spring as he recovered from December shoulder surgery, though he was present throughout practices open to the media. He worked with the second-team defense at times during the Lions’ jog-through periods.

Campbell said before the final practice of mandatory minicamp on June 17 that Arnold would have to earn his starting job back once healthy. Rock Ya-Sin took most of the first-team reps opposite starter D.J. Reed in Arnold’s absence this spring. Ennis Rakestraw Jr., a third-year cornerback, also will compete for the No. 2 cornerback job this summer.

The Lions are otherwise thin at cornerback. Roger McCreary is expected to handle some slot duties, while rookie Keith Abney and special-teams ace Khalil Dorsey are among others vying for backup jobs.

Arnold declined comment on the case after minicamp. When asked if he has made any changes to his inner circle, he said he had not. “Like I mean. I’m a home guy. hang around my family and stuff like that. but a far as things like that. I just feel like kind of when certain things happen in life it’s best to remain silent. ” he said. “And I mean. you speak on stuff that you want to speak on it. but at the end of the day. silence sometimes is the best answer. like I said before. That’s how I treat it.”.

As the arrest date marks a hard new phase in the allegations, prosecutors are preparing to push for Arnold to remain jailed while the case heads toward the pretrial process. For Arnold, the stakes are not abstract: the charges he faces carry a potential sentence of up to life in prison.
