Teresa Mannion retires from RTE after more than 40 years

Teresa Mannion has announced her retirement from RTE. The news correspondent has been a recognisable face on our screens for decades, and started working with RTE over 40 years ago. Teresa said she has “spent almost all my working life there”, but will soon be moving on to another chapter. She has reported on all sorts of major stories over the course of her career, but it was her warning to the public to not take unnecessary journeys that went viral during Storm Desmond in
2015. Speaking to the RTE Guide, she said people constantly say the well-known phrase to her and she has accepted it’s what she will always been known most for. “Hardly a day goes by that someone doesn’t say it to me,” she said. “It’s the gift that keeps giving. And now it’s almost a cultural reference point. I’ll be on Reeling in the Years forever more. “And I must accept that’s what I will always be associated with despite having done so many other things
and work that I’m proud of, from hard news to the tragedies and all in-between, but that story will always remain, in a good way.” She added: “Down the years, I’ve been approached with a lot of stuff linked to that quote but as I worked in the newsroom I couldn’t. But who knows going forward what I might do? I might review those options.” The viral moment led to her becoming more well-known across the country and as a result she landed a stint
on Dancing With The Stars. “Within 48 hours the report had gone all around the world, there were dances remixes, memes and so many offspins created after the bulletin. I totally embraced it and took it on-board, there was very little negativity afterwards and I wasn’t trolled online,” she recalled to RSVP Magazine a number of years ago. “In fact, I was given legendary status which is very funny in my mind. On a serious note, I started working with the Road Safety Authority telling
motorists how drive safely in hail, rain or snow.” She also shared her possible plans for retirement with the RTE Guide as she’s considering a trip to Japan and the prospect of becoming a lecturer.
